Kentucky 1996 Championship Team
Only lost 2 games, both to teams that made the Final 4. Moreover, they beat both of those teams (Miss St & UMASS) during the season – in fact, beat Miss St. by over 20.

8 players from the team made the NBA. When they lost to UMASS it was early in the year and they started Tony Delk at point guard. After losing the game, he was moved to the 2-spot. However, he was good enough to start half the following season at point for the Golden State Warriors in the NBA. In other words, he was good enough to start at the position for an NBA team, but not for KY.

I never saw them but given Kareem’s dominance, I gotta go with 1967 UCLA as well. For me this fact says it all: When Kareem was a Freshman, he was ineligible to play and UCLA won the NCAA championship without him. However, when they played “the freshman team” they lost. Imagine that? …the champion is not even the best at their own school…

But if we are talking 1980′s on, I gotta go with UNLV, G-Town 84, and then Carolina. Temple, They lost Sleepy and Eric smith from the 82 team but gained like 5 HS all-americans including Reggie Williams, Wingate, Bill Martin, Michael Jackson, To me he was the X-factor of the 84 team over 85 was freshman Michael Graham who came on strong toward the end of the year. (before he was kicked off the team) G-town had much more depth than Carolina in 82 and MJ wasn’t MJ yet — despite the jumper. That was definitely worthy’s team…

Didn’t D. Anderson get hurt early in that title season for Kentucky, that’s how Mercer was virtually discovered.

I LOVE the Hoyas…that’s my squad – and it’s arguable that their ’84 team was weaker than the two teams that lost in ’82 and ’85. With that said, you can’t be serious. The North Carolina squad with James Worthy, Sam Perkins, Michael Jordan and Jimmy Black can’t get in the Top 3? Holla!!

UCLA was before my time but they have to be in that group as well.

I also have to say that the 1996 Kentucky Wildcats were also an excellent team. Antoine Walker, Derrick Anderson, Ron Mercer – all super star collegians plus Nazr Mohammed, Walter McCarty, Tony Delk and Scott Padgett. That team has size, speed, depth, the ability to press and the ability to score inside and out. I don’t know where I’d put them – not number 1 – but they’re part of an interesting conversation.

I think the undefeated Indiana team should be part of the conversation as well.

As for Florida – I can’t give up all that love just yet. It’ll have to marinate a bit. One could argue that they beat up on a slow, sloppy UCLA team and a far-too-young Ohio State team led by two freshman (Conley-Oden).

Vegas was the truth – so much so that they threw the game the next year against Duke. AWFUL!!!!!!!
