TBR’s First Annual 2008 NFL Mock Draft (Pick 29-31)

Today we wrap up our First Annual NFL Mock Draft and I must say I’ve had a blast. I’m sure the first round won’t pan out like this; with Miami signing #1 pick OT Jake Long yesterday I’m already in the hole. How about the Vikings giving up a first rounder to the Chiefs and meeting the $30 million in guaranteed money for DE Jared Allen. I’m far from a draft expert and from what I seen and heard so are a lot of others. I just wanted to add something to the site and since everyone and their mother does a mock draft, why not us.
We’ll wrap it up today with San Francisco, Green Bay and the Super Bowl Champion New York Giants, so let get things going.
29.
What do the 49ers need?
- Wide Receiver
- Outside Linebacker
- Defensive Line
What will they do?
The 49ers are looking to add some life to their receiving corps, which didn’t have a receiver gain over 600 yards last season. Bringing in an aging Issac Bruce is more for tutelage than it is for on the field production, although Bruce will be looked upon to make a play or two. The Niners will miss Bryant Young , who has retired. His absence has left a hole in the 49ers 3-4 defense that may be addressed in the 2nd or 2rd round. The defense could also use a linebacker to play alongside 2007 Defensive Rookie of the Year Patrick Willis.
The Pick: The 49ers pick again at 39 and will look for help along the defensive line with that pick. For now they will turn this pick over to Offensive Coordinator Mike Martz and select a receiver.

Mario Manningham out of Michigan has a slender build, but has the abilty to get up field, making himself a deep threat. Manningham has a great senior season in spite of playing on an injury-riddled offense.
30.
What do the Packers need?
- Outside Linebacker
- Guard
- Tight End
- Quarterback
- Running Back (Depth)
What will they do?
The Packers have some pretty solid pieces in place for Aaron Rodgers as he replaces Brett Favre who retired earlier this season. Rookie Ryan Grant came from nowhere to be the catalyst in the Pack’s running attack. Donald Driver, Greg Jennings and James Jones were excellent targets for Favre. Just when you think Driver is beginning to slow down he does something to drop your jaw. There is a need for a tight end with the loss of Bubba Franks and a backup for Rodgers is needed.
Defensively, the Packers are looking for help at outside linebacker, they are set with A.J. Hawk on one side and Nick Barnett in the middle but Brady Poppinga and Tracey White haven’t been able to get it done so the pack will look to grab some help at #30. In the 2nd round Green Bay has 2 picks (56 and 60) and will look at possibly a guard and a backup QB for Rodgers.
The Pick: Ali Highsmith from LSU is solid in all areas and should fit in well at the outside linebacker position.

What do the Giants need?
- Outside Linebacker
- Safety
- Wide Receiver
What will they do?
The Giants defense was hit hard in the opening days of free agency, the G-Men lost backup linebacker Reggie Torbor and safety Gibril Wilson but the biggest blow came when the Buffalo Bills signed starting outside linebacker Kawika Mitchell from them essentially leaving the Giants naked at outside linebacker. They were able to sign veteran Sammy Knight who is no spring chicken, so the Giants will also be looking to acquire a safety as well. Both Plaxico Burress and Amani Toomer are in their 30’s and now is the time to bring in a potential #1 guy when one of these two decides to call it a career (more than likely Toomer will be first).
The Pick: Jerod Mayo of Tennessee is just what the Giants need, a very physical player, although he lined up inside his speed may allow him to play outside. His experience at Tennessee on the inside has made him reliable against the run.

I think NY Giants have a nice WR core, I don’t think there are any breakout WR who are avaiable this late in the draft. I can’t for the life of me think of any WR who is just an outright burner. They have a nice young possession receiver in Steve Smith.
I think we will be better able to see the needs of the Giants after they trade Shockey. I think they are trying to get his trade done before the draft. They could get a great deal from a trade involving him since he is a superstar TE.

Seattle just cut Shawn Alexander and they’re making a push for Shockey along w/the Saints.

I don’t see what they would get for Shockey from the Saints or the Seahawks. I mean the saints really don’t have a great LB core, they got Johnathan Vilma, but I doubt they put him up after they just got him, they have nothing on offense to give away, I only see them giving up picks. The Seahawks have Julian Peterson , a pass rushing LB, that the Giants might want, but other than him, I don’t see anyone off the top of my head who they would want either.

It’ll be for picks, when was the last time a REAL NFL Trade involved a series of players. Especially a straight up deal. Strahan may play one more season and they may lose Umi if they don’t get the money right so they’ll be looking for young linemen and whatever else.

The Giants are going to want more than just picks for Shockey I’m thinking, but who knows. I hope Shockey ends up in NO, the home of the losers.

All they’ll get is picks maybe a 2 and a 3, dude’s injury prone.
April 23rd, 2008 at 6:38 pm
They’ll get more than a 2 and 3 for Shockey. This is the biggest injury Shockey has had, broken fibula, so I dont see how you can say he is injury prone, that is bogus.
I heard Roman Harper and a 2nd round pick, but they said the Saints refused that deal. So maybe the Seahawks will give them Trufant and a 2nd round pick.
