The Big Three Crush The Lakers, Win Title No.17 For The Celtics.

We knew it was going to be a special season when they appeared at their first press conference together; sporting the Celtic green and flashing those 1000-watt smiles Paul Pierce, Ray Allen and Kevin Garnett we chosen to lead the Boston Celtics back to the pinnacle of the NBA.

Last night their mission was accomplished.

As their team destroyed the Lakers for its first NBA title in 22 years, Boston fans had every reason to revel, Mark Kriegel says.

In the most lopsided title-clinching game in NBA History the Boston Celtics crushed the Los Angeles Lakers 131-92.

Triggered by a 34-point 2nd period the Celtics cruised to title No.17 as they went into the intermission with a 58-35 lead. Things didn’t get any better for Kobe Braynt (7-22 22 points) and the Lakers who struggled to find a consistent rhythm throught the evening.

Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen each scored 26 points for the Celtics while Finals MVP Paul Pierce scored 17 point and dished out 10 assists.

The win was an emotional one for Celtics’ coach Doc Rivers, who lost his father suddenly during the season. When asked what his father would say, Rivers said with a smile, “ He would say good job, it took long enough.”

The Championship is the first for Rivers, Pierce, Allen and Garnett and the first for the Celtics franchise since 1986.

Left out of the celebration was Kobe Bryant who was looking to win his first title minus former teammte Shaquille O’Neal. Bryant’s once strong supporting cast that helped push the Lakers into the Finals struggled throughout the series before enduring a total meltdown last night.

A season of redemption ended in disappointment for Kobe Bryant. His Finals performance won't help his legacy, Jeff Goodman says.

Bryant is once again left to wonder if his teammates are ready to take the next step. Next season the Lakers will have a healthy Andrew Bynum who missed this series.

With the key components firmly in place the Celtics are looking forward to defending and possibly repeating as Champions

Congratulations to the 2008 Celtics (Doc Rivers, KG, Paul Pierce, Ray Allen, PJ Brown, and the rest of the guys).

I gotta say that I like this group more than the 1986 Celtics

As much as I like these guys I feel some kind of way for the other guys that never won a title. On any given night 2 of these stars could play badly and Boston could still win. Many former number one options were not awarded that luxury. Guys who probably never played poorly in a playoff series and still didn’t win a title. With three number one options anything short of a title would have been a huge failure. So congrats I guess.

Did someone mention the 1996-1997 Houston Rockets? Of course that entire team was almost put out to pasture, but they had Hakeem, Clyde and Chuck. Point guard? Matt Maloney. Who?? Matt Maloney. Oh, that Matt Maloney.
