NBA Free Agency 2008

The NBA free agency period is already into its second week. With teams able to announce signings on Wednesday July 9, business should pick up in a hurry.

In Philadelphia, the 76ers wooed Atlanta Hawks free agent Josh Smith last week with everything from a limo ride from the airport to a lunchtime meeting with mayor Michael Nutter. All signs look to the 76ers offering Smith the max ($16 million) no later than Wednesday. Hawks forward Josh Childress is also scheduled to visit with Philadelphia. The 76ers have also maintained that they will resign free agents Andre Iguodala and Louis Williams.
The Washington Wizards kept their nucleus intact by signing forward Antwain Jamison (4 years $50 million) and Gilbert Arenas (6 years $111 million) to deals that will keep both in the Nation’s Capital for the foreseeable future.
Out in the West, the LA Clippers are the talk of the league, as they have agreed in principle with Baron Davis on a five-year $65 million deal that leaves the Golden State Warriors minus a leader and a point guard. The Warriors have countered by reportedly offering Clippers forward Elton Brand a five-year deal worth more than $100 million. Brand can also resign with the Clippers if he chooses.

One member of the Clippers that will not be returning is shooting guard Corey Maggette, who is reportedly being looked at by Orlando, Philadelphia, Golden State, Detroit, San Antonio, and Boston…yes Boston. The C’s have the mid-level exception on the table. ($5.8 million) Although Maggette may crack the starting lineup elsewhere, he will be in more of a supporting role in Boston where the Celtics are looking to defend the their World Championship. IMHO, that could change if the Spurs snag Maggette.
The New Orleans Hornets have extended the contract of Chris Paul for three seasons bringing the total of the deal to $68 million.
Underrated Toronto Raptors point guard Jose Calderon reached a one-year agreement with the team, details have not been released.
The Cleveland Cavaliers are still trying to put a package together for Milwaukee Bucks guard Michael Redd. It has been rumored that Redd has been on the trading block since the Bucks acquired Richard Jefferson from the Nets last month.

I agree, I like him but not for $111 million.
July 8th, 2008 at 5:12 pm
What about the zeros GS supposedly offered to Elton Brand? Over 100 mil for 5 yrs? I like Brand but damn…..20 mil a year?
July 8th, 2008 at 5:41 pm
There is a report that Philly is moving Rodney Carney to Memphis or Minnesota to clear cap space for Brand. They are saying that Brand is likely to sign because his playoff chances are better in Philly and he likes the young team.
We’ll see.
