Live Blog of Olympic Quarterfinal Between the USA and Australia!
The US team enters the quarterfinals with a unblemished record of 5-0. Dwyane Wade leads the team in scoring with just over 16 in 18 minutes. I had a real fake heated conversation last night with a writer who feels this team–evolution wise–is better than the original Dream Team of 1992. I’m still shocked. It’s difficult discussing eras, but I really don’t think this team collectively has the cojones to beat that once in a lifetime dream. How is this even a question? I don’t personally think this team is better than the 1996 collective.
Michael would smash all comers–I don’t care if it’s Kobe, Flash or LeBron. I’d also take Charles Barkley over Carmelo and Karl Malone (even though I couldn’t stand him) over anything this team has down low. Dwight is too raw. He might be stronger, but so what. Now this team is stacked with potential Hall of Fame players, but while they are more physically gifted, I feel they don’t have the killer instinct or collective basketball I.Q. to put that team away. The competition then was not what it is now, but you did have Sabonis and Oscar Schmidt wrecking shop. Now my boy also argued that Barkley would be undersized and doesn’t play a lick of defense, but who on this team is gonna get in Chuck’s way when he’s on the break? Who would check Chuck? (on a side note, he would take Black Pharoah over Chuck all time at the four) On the other hand, who would check LeBron? Pippen? How would the current Olympic squad deal with Hall of Fame savvy that was all over the place?
Strength?
What would Bosh, Howard and company do with David Robinson and Patrick Ewing?
Mike Greenberg actually said he would take Dwight Howard over Patrick Ewing. He must be smoking crack!
Being physically gifted does not always translate into wins. My boy said this team would beat the Dream Team 6 out of 10 times but in a NBA setting his trend would reverse. He was correct in saying that Bird and Magic were on their way out, but Bird and Chris Mullin would still splash water threes all over this squad. Magic would do the damn thing by backing down….Chris Paul, Kidd or DWill…and dish over his head for a Barkley bang plus one or a Drexler glide boof. Who is better? Prince or Pip? Not even close. It’s not about what you do physically all the time kids. There has to be some intelligence offered. I will admit that no one except maybe Kobe is in his prime and all of this team has a tremendous upside, but give me the Old School any day bruh…
It’s not even a discussion. When asked the question here, Kobe shakes his head and smiles before the lady could finish her thought…
I get a question in there around the 1:20 mark. My bad. Don’t get whiplash
I also asked Clyde how this current team stacks up:
Michael Tillery: Clyde when I spoke with Kobe at another event, he was asked if this team could compete with the Dream Team and Kobe shook his head before the question was asked.
Clyde Drexler: “This is the best team since that team and also the ’96 team. We had more size and also athleticism…remember we had Magic running the show at 6’9” and Michael, Barkley, Malone and myself—to name a few. Let’s just watch this team before we label them the next anything.”
Loyal TSF reader Grand Nubian opines:
“I gotta agree with you Mizz…..this team is not better than the “Dream Team” or the ‘96 team. When it’s all said and done, they may be number 3 on the all-time list. But any squad with MJ, Magic, Bird…..on the same team? It’s not even a discussion.”
“The ‘92 Dream Team had no weaknesses (none that I saw). The “Redeem Team” is undersized and only has one real threat outside and that’s Redd.
Compare them to the 96 team and I have to ask, who would guard Shaq, Hakeem and Robinson? It would get ugly!”
Please continue the discussion in the comments after the game.
Game starts in 30 minutes at 8:00. Australia has been the closest to the US score wise (87-76), but this is not the same team they faced. They now are playing stellar defense, creating the turnover and getting out on the break to capitalize on their amazing athleticism advantage. They also have been shooting threes at a much better clip.
Simply put, this team can smell vindication…
Let’s Get it! It’s time to put up or shut up. Win or go home.
Winner takes on the winner of Greece/Argentina
USA wins 95-78.

LeBron and his mates look like they are all bout business before the tap.
Howard misses something close inside.
Bogut gets his shot smacked.
Melo hits a baseline jumper.
LeBron takes it to the cup, misses, Howard misses the tap, gets the rebound and gets fouled.
The Aussies are the second best three point shooting team here behind Argentina.
Howard misses the first three throw…and the second. They are 11 out of 12 teams from the stripe.
Deep entry pass from Kidd to Howard for the make plus the bump. Bogut us over matched inside. Howard makes the free throw.
USA 5, Australia 0.
Australia comes back with a make plus the foul.
Melo nice drive and the lay.
C.J. Bruton..who at first glance looks like Scoop Jax..gets smacked by Kidd.
Bogut picks up his second foul and looks fatigued already.
Kobe hits a baseline jumper to the delight of the crowd.
Bogut misses a three and looks very tentative–as does the rest of his team.
Bron Bron makes a three.
Barlow scores on a nice drive.
Howard with a monster dunk!
USA 14, AUS 5.
Neilsen also picks up his second foul. He’s the captain of the Aussie squad. He’s the guy who you love to play with but hate to play against.
15-6 USA.
Mills hits a three.
Barlow hits another three.
Three point game.
Jason Kidd makes a nice jumper from the elbow. He’s made all three of his shots.

USA 20, AUS 17. The US better guard the three much tighter.
Chris Paul gets a board amongst the trees and throws an oop to Wade who misses. LeBron gets hacked.
USA 4-9 from the stripe early.
USA 21, AUS 17.
Anstey scores again.
USA 21, AUS 19.
USA hits a three.
Mills hits two free throws.
USA 24, AUS 22.
Bosh to the line inside of ten seconds.
Bosh misses first they are now 4-10.
Make that 5-10.
Oooooh sweet left from Mills with Paul defending plus the foul. Misses the free throw.
Paul gets hacked at the buzzer to no avail.
After 1 quarter, the US leads by 1, 24-24.
Observations: The US has to guard the three better and also has to keep going down low instead of settling for open threes. Australia is packing it in but have nothing to match our size inside. Unless the US gets hot, this could get interesting.
During the break they show Michael Phelps kicking it with the squad. Must be a great feeling for Phelps. He’ll get carte blanche anywhere and everywhere for as long as he lives.
Wade scores plus the foul after a Bogut miss.
Saville with a bucket.
Melo with a jumper. He has 10. Lead to four.
DWill on the steal, gets ripped back by Mills who then scores on an up and under over Bosh.
Bosh looks a little upset. He doesn’t have the chill funny guy attitude he alludes to here:
Bosh makes free throws. US 31, AUS 28.
Bron Bron on the baseline slam.
Bogut with a pretty left–his first two.
Kobe with the get up and bang it with full extension.
Then comes back with a fake to the lane for the dish.
USA up seven. Turnovers are beginning to be forced because of US pressure.
USA’s largest deficit is four in the tournament. they lead 37-30.
Bogut with another left plus the hack. They should know Bogus stee by now.
USA gets their 10th offensive rebound and DWill scores inside.
LeBron does the same even though he gets hacked by Scoop’s brother.
Yeah it is Michelle…
USA 41, AUS 34.
4:41 left in the half.
Andersen with a pivot jumper.
Lead is five.
Bron Bron comes back with the hulk move inside plus the bang. You know when you score and you stay flexed? Yeah that.
Gets a little chippy in there and the teams have to be separated. Be smart brothas.
Melo makes two free throws.

Coach K better be giving them the John Thompson treatment.
Anthony and James lead with 12 apiece. LeBron looks as if he wants to take over because of the astounding size advantage he has in the back court.
- elaineflash Says:
August 20th, 2008 at 12:45 pm hey.. as expected, its a close game. dwade already has 2pf.. cmon D!
Yeah elaine..it shouldn’t be this close. We have to close out on defense, stop the dribble drives and go strong to the hole.
On a side note, the Japanese pitcher, Yukiko Ueno, pitched her country into the championship against the
US by throwing two complete games in the same day. One was a 4-1 loss (a Crystl Bustos bomb won it) to the US and then she came back and threw a 12 inning complete game 4-3 win against Australia. For the day she throws an amazing 319 pitches. Gold medal game tomorrow 6 am EST.
Kobe opens up the half with a three.
Melo comes back with a three.
LeBron dives like he doesn’t have 900 million on the floor.
Great hustle play.

I wish brothaman, but it is a little early for brew bruh… I gotcha on the sandwich though.
Kobe with another three. What the hell did they give him at halftime?
USA goes on a 14-0 run to begin the half. Big shot by Deron WIlliams right at the first half buzzer.
Kobe, in setting up for another three point dagger, misses a Kidd pass. Anyone remember when that used to happen to them and you would scream ” Go to the hole!”
Mills with a three.
LeBron is just too damn big for the Aussies and scores big boy down low again with the foul. USA has a 17-2 offensive board advantage and are shooting 52%.
Worthington scores for AUS.
USA 71, AUS 48.
Bogut is done for the game and is icing his ankle. Could be trouble for the Milwaukee Bucks.
Nice feed…James to Bosh for the BOOF!.
USA 73, AUS 48.

August 20th, 2008 at 1:07 pm I’m sick of everyone being afraid of the competition. I wrote a story yesterday…this is not the NBA. Teams cannot keep up with TEAM USA over 4 quarters. They have too many weapons and too much HEART.

Ok…back to the action. DWill with another basket.
USA 91, AUS, 63.
Mike Breen says they are going to push the line back to 21, have a restricted area in the paint and change the trapezoid into a rectangle.
Michael Redd finally gets in. I don’t understand Coach K’s rotation…as Redd scores.
Why can’t the whole squad get some burn like the ladies.
Kobe Bryant shoots it from Lower Merion, which is up the street from me, for three.
96-67 USA.
Australia goes to the press.
DAMN Kobe shoots it from Africa and AUS comes right back with one of their own.

Team USA has to pick it up on defense, stop doubling and leaving open shooters. They need to establish a rhythmn among the guards (CP3 & DWill) and Bosh needs to play better “D”.
I fully expect them to turn it up a notch (or two) on the defensive end come the 2nd Qtr.

GrandNubian Says:

-
GrandNubian Says:
August 20th, 2008 at 1:30 pmKobe has a chance to break Barkely’s record for most pts in a game (30, I think). Bean Bryant currently has 22.

boy this boomers sure are feisty. i commend the team for not trash talking back, but they wont let themselves get punked either. letting their game speak for itself! redeem team = classy

-
GrandNubian Says:
August 20th, 2008 at 1:45 pm116-85 is your final….
-
The Most Known Unknown Says:
August 20th, 2008 at 1:45 pmNo one can beat this team over 40 minutes of play. If the game ended after the 1st quarter then there might be trouble. Come on, trust Michael and I on the fact that this team is no joke in their own right. No comparisons to any other teams, they are the Redeem Team, point blank.
-
GrandNubian Says:
August 20th, 2008 at 1:47 pm“Wow Bean’s birthday is the day before the gold medal game and Michael Redd’s is on the day of.”

aww. thanks mizzo!

August 20th, 2008 at 12:29 pm I must say that I like Melo’s aggressiveness in going to the basket. Maybe this will set the tone for the others.
August 20th, 2008 at 12:29 pm They were probably out partying last night. They look tired. They need not get cocky and lose a game.
August 20th, 2008 at 12:30 pm Damn…..we can’t buy a “trey”. DWill’s shoot is off.
August 20th, 2008 at 12:30 pm
