Ron Glover’s NFL Recap: Week 6

Player of the Week

Andre%20Johnson%20111907 Ron Glovers NFL Recap: Week 6

Houston Texans receiver Andre Johnson had 10 receptions for 178 yards and a touchdown as the Texans won for the first time this season, a 29-28 thriller over the Miami Dolphins.

The Texans weren’t the only team to notch their first win yesterday.

St. Louis 19 - Washington 17

The Rams played 60 minutes of football. The Skins looked like they were waiting for the Rams to cave in, it never happened.

San Diego 30 - New England 10

Phillip Rivers threw for three touchdowns as the Chargers improve to 3-3. I wonder which Chargers team shows up against the Bills next week?

Green Bay 27 - Seattle 17

The Seahawks were never able to get it in gear, not having Matt Hasselbeck didn’t help much either.

Philadelphia 40 - San Francisco 26

Juqua Parker had a sack and an interception return for a TD to ice the game. Correll Buckhalter and DeSean Jackson shined on offense, but the game ball goes to the defense for shutting Frisco down in the 4th quarter.

Arizona 30 - Dallas 24

I’ve never seen  visiting team cheered like that on the road in any sport. Mt. Owens should be ready to blow any minute now.

Jacksonville 24 - Denver 17

The Jags have a bye week before facing the Browns and Bengals.

Colts 31 - Ravens 3

The Colts offense returned to form as Marvin Harrison scored twice in a gamefor the first time in two seasons. The defense forced five turnovers, as Robert Mathis had three sacks and a forced fumble.

Tampa Bay 27 - Carolina 3

The Bucs had three picks and a blocked punt returned for a score. The Panthers running game was non-existent.

Houston 29 - Miami 28

Matt Shaub and Andre Johnson put the team on their shoulders to pull out their first victory. Shaub would score from three yards out with three seconds left.

New York Jets 26 - Cincinnati 14

The Bengals defense kept them in the game, it was the offense that was unable to close the deal.

New Orleans 34 - Oakland 3

So much for Jamarcus Russell’s homecoming. Drew Brees was able to connect with five different receivers on his way to another 300-yard game.

Atlanta 22 - Chicago 20

The Falcons stayed close and stole it at the end. A definite confidence builder.

Minnesota 12 - Detroit 10

The VIkings can thank DT Kevin Williams (4 sacks) that the Lions are still winless. Detroit won the turnover battle but could not capitalize.

Well, we’re now down to one undefeated team in the NFL (Titans).

    TBR:

Dallas isn’t as good as everything thought they were. The defense is not stellar. The offense suffers from a tendency to force the ball where it doesn’t belong. I do believe the Cowboys should throw the ball deep on 1st down with regularlity — to stretch defenses and to keep them honest in the middle of the field, but the best and most reliable options on the team are Barber and Witten.

Chris Berman called this one. If you follow this series, you know that Arizona gives Dallas fits at home. This is always their Super Bowl. There are so many Cowboy fans in the Southwest (after all, the Cardinals were in St. Louis). Remember when Emmitt went to the Cardinals. That move was partially to put fannies in the seats. The Bidwells knew that Cowboy fans would turn out to see Emmitt in Cardinal red.

With that said, if you really want to see a road team get love — check the video of the Steelers-Cowboys game in Dallas back in ‘05 (maybe ‘04). Steeler Nation took over Texas Stadium and won the game, too.

Steve Young called the Browns. Interesting…

I’m surprised at the effectiveness of Derek Anderson. I saw him play several games in college and earlier in his pro career. I’ve always thought he was terrible. He looked good in spots last night - but his receivers made him look good, as well.

Yeah it was a classic trap game.

As far as the Steelers, I was talking to Reggie Williams yesterday and we discussed Steeler Nation loyalty. He said there is no comparison besides the Yankees in sports when Blitzburgh is on the road.

    Damn Skippy!!!!!

  5. Temple3 Says:

I think there are 3 stadiums in the league that Steeler Nation can’t take over - Lambeau, Arrowhead and Foxboro. I only put NE on the list because they’ve won so much lately…but only Green Bay and KC seem to have that serious lock down on tickets. That’s about it.

They even took over Mile High during their Super Bowl run in ‘05. Terrible Towels everywhere.

  6. Mizzo Says:

Yeah, I felt like a kid talking to Reggie. He’s got some stories.

No one is taking over Arrowhead. They would whup ass before that came to pass.

Those folk in GB have been waiting entirely too long for tickets to give them up.

As far as NE, that’s a regional thing.

  7. Temple3 Says:

I think folks must buy tickets in blocks as soon as the schedule comes out. I believe they’ve won more games than any team in the league since Cowher was hired…so that means the road games are almost always worth buying. No one was talking about Steeler Nation when Bubby Brister and Mark Malone were running the show. Still, they’ve had a very long run of success.

FINALLY, something for the lone Browns fan up in heah to cheer about. The Browns finally showed up and did the damn thing and beat down the defending World Champs, N.Y. G-Men. It is a good day. Colors look more vivid. Music sounds better. Breakfast was wonderful. I could get used to this.

    What I noticed:

IF Donté Stallworth is healthy the The Browns have a really good offense.

The offense has more of a rhythm WITHOUT Kellen Winslow. Is he going to fall victim to the J. Shockey ?the “U” Curse on the tight ends and get shown the door.

IF the Browns want to make some noise they have got to find some discipline from somewhere. Fines, laps, walking dogs. Whatever. Too many penalties.

Ron Jaworski is funny. Tony Korn is not.

    Good call Steve Young.

Will someone please get the mush out of Emmitt Smith’s mouf. Geesh.

    Patience Brady Quinn.

    A little emotion Romeo.

Think B-More misses Jamal Lewis? I think so.

The Browns still need a playmaking linebacker and a veteran corner. (Hello Ty Law, where are you?)

Finally, I would NOT want the responsibility of bringing Brandon Jacobs down. Nope.
