Just an aside:

In 2007, the Eagles dropped 4 games in November/December up north (home vs. Dallas, Seattle and the Giants; road vs. New England). They won twice - at home vs. Buffalo (big deal) and on the road vs. Washington. I'm sure many of you Eagle fans remember that game. McNabb was 20-28 for 251 with 4 Tds and 0 Ints. The Eagles passed 28 times and ran 28 times.

NOTHING has changed in Philly. The team is structurally flawed and the problem is not Donovan McNabb.

Mizzo - I think those are all fair points. I find Favre's career to be the most interesting because it spans the eras of significant rules changes in the NFL to increase offensive production. Favre has had some terrible years. He's had some mediocre years. He's had some great years. The thing about him has been his durability and subsequently, his ability to compile incredible statistics.

I don't believe there is any question that Brady, Manning and Favre would not have been benched DURING a GAME.

Manning had some of his worst career performances against the New England Patriots -- games where he clearly cost solid teams a chance to win. There were games the Patriots won by the skin of their nuts where Manning threw multiple INTs and never put the ball anywhere near the endzone. Even in the midst of awful performances against 3-4 defenses like San Diego, Pittsburgh and others, he was never benched. Last year, his stat line against San Diego was incredible.

34-56, 300+ yards, 2 TDs, 6 INTs. The Colts lost by 3. Manning wasn't benched because the coaches 1) respect him 2) understand he gives them the best chance to win 3) know that removing him signals a concession of the game.

Favre and Brady have had stinkers too. Brady wasn't benched in the midst of that embarassing 4 pick game vs. Miami a few years ago. You ride the horse that gets you to the dance -- good or bad. It's called loyalty and integrity. I don't think Reid knows a whole lot about that. When a team chooses to bench the FACE of the FRANCHISE, it's a clear signal that the franchise is in total disarray. I don't believe the Cardinals game should change anything.

Frankly, all the Cardinals game did was reinforce that McNabb is an elite talent and that when the team is balanced on offense, they are formidable. No news there. Nothing to report. The issue is that the Eagles remain a franchise at odds with itself. They are in the Northeast and have rivals with power backs like Jacobs, Ward, Barber, and Portis. They have a finesse back and still can't grind it out on 3rd and short or 4th and short. They still have to TRICK teams in critical game situations. They still rely on Herculean efforts from McNabb in big games and still don't have the means to support him properly.

The Colts, Patriots and Packers were never constructed that way. The weather rules everywhere except in the head of Panama Andy Reid.

Phil see the positives in the piece, not your negatives. Brady is the only quarterback in the bunch who conceivably could say he showed and proved on his way to the title. Even Brady could be argued because of NE's defense during their amazing run and AV kicking the rock. Favre is fortunate he had Desmond Howard and Reggie White. Manning won because of great coaching and a powerful running game. Don't give them all the credit as McNabb shouldn't harness all the blame.

Thanks to the rest of you. I enjoyed writing this. The season is yet to be written.
