Friday Fire: Tim Tebow is Not the Best College Football Player Ever!
Not the best, but the best game
Look, lets stop all this bs now. I know it’s not Friday, but I gotta get this conversation started because Tim Tebow is not the best college football player ever. Are you shocked ESPN is leading the charge? Todd McShay…what the hell are you smoking?
The championship he won was as a back up and what big game has he won? I’m not talking about a SEC Conference championship. Uh…Tommie Frazier? Charles Woodson? Vince Young had a much more successful career and beat two Heismans to win a chip. Don’t let Young’s pro career blind you because his championship performance rivals ANY in sports history. Archie Griffin won two Heismans. Bo Jackson, Jim Thorpe, Tony Dorsett???? Jim Brown, Hugh Green, Earl Campbell, Doug Flutie? Mike Rozier? Randy Moss? KiJana Carter? Marcus Allen, Michael Vick, Charles White, Herschel Walker, Marshall Faulk, The Rocket, Deion Sanders, Barry Sanders???? Desmond Howard. The list goes on and on and I didn’t really go old school. Who is on your list? Tebow sympathizers, please make your Steve Nash case. Don’t even bring race into it because this is common sense. Tebow’s touchdowns have come deeeeeep in the red zone. When has he ever broke a long one? How many game winning drives has he had or even come from behind wins? His motion looks as if he’s throwing against himself–almost as if it hurts. Compare Tommie Frazier’s record to that of Tim Tebow’s. Tebow isn’t even the best player this year. Michael Crabtree is. Tim Tebow isn’t in the top 25.
Let me refresh your memory of just how great Tommie Frazier was.

I think they’re just trying to get links and coverage by being provocative. What else are they going to talk about? Week 15 injuries and FFL updates?

Seriously — don’t you think they were just bullshittin’ — yankin’ yer chain — joshin’ — aw shucks, foolin’ er-round?
Tebow. Best ever. That shit is simply hilarious.

Yeah, I’m under the same notion that Tebow isn’t the greatest ever, he’s not the greatest this year, but I’d disagree that its Crabtree. I think that Jeremy Maclin might be more deserving, or even “sigh” Colt McCoy (i hate Texas, Oklahoma born Oklahoma bred, I’ll be a Sooner till I’m dead…) but you’re right about Tebow’s rushing touchdowns and lack of long runs. I do think that his ability to get 5-6 yards running on pass plays makes it extremely tough on defenses. I don’t know what he’s gonna look like in the NFL. I think he’s a better QB than Vince Young was, but NO FLORIDA QUARTERBACK HAS EVER MADE IT BIG IN THE NFL.
When your best alumni QB is Rex Grossman, you need to re-evaluate where you stand in projecting NFL talent for that school. Get at me!

Why do you say he was a better quarterback than Vince Young? Has Tebow ever went for 200/200 once? Let alone twice? Jeremy is a bad boy and so is Colt, but Michael Crabtree is a straight up can’t miss NFL prospect who has put up big numbers the second he stepped on campus. He could have played in the NFL as a freshman because of his polish and professionalism. Anyone who picks Tebow in the first two rounds is stupid.

Not biting on Portis vs. Zorn and media alignment with Zorn? Media ignores potential humiliation angle as league’s 2008 leading rusher (Week 10) and top blocking back is benched in regional rivalry featuring two prominent U-Miami Hurricanes on defense (Ed Reed, Ray Lewis).
Did I miss something?
Oh, what the fuck has Jim Zorn ever done as player or coach?
December 11th, 2008 at 6:19 pm
1 more thing.
Zorn did do something significant. He credited PORTIS with convincing him to run a play that won a game for them earlier this season. Portis’ conviction was based on his knowledge of the GAME SITUATION and film study. I think I’m done.

One thing I hate about the Heisman, is that they change the criteria every year to suit whoever the media wants to blow up that year. Tebow is one of the beneficiaries. You knew he was going to win it last year, because every time you heard a college football announcer, he was always talking about Tebow. He definitely isn’t the best player this year. I think Tebow will win it, though, b/c in the Southwest, the votes will be split between McCoy, Crabtree, Harrell, and Bradford. I’ve also been hearing talk about this being a better year because of Tebow’s leadership. I never knew leadership was a criteria for the Heisman. If it was, then shouldn’t more defensive players have won it than Woodson?
I actually would rank Colt McCoy first, and Crabtree second. I think that Crabtree will be a better pro, but if you ask me who had the better season, I’d say Colt McCoy because of that muderous part of Texas’ schedule and how Texas came out of it with only one close loss that wasn’t his fault.
Tebow will probably go in the first round because of the hype around him. I seriously doubt that the things he’s doing in college, he’d get away with in the pros. No pro team is going to run the spread offense 100% of the time. And those little runs he’s getting away with now, a couple of hits from an inside linebacker will defintely make him think better of it.

kos:
Too bad that kid on Texas dropped that ball that was right in his hands. I wonder how his life would be different now if he’d caught that errant pass. Whew! You don’t want the defining moment (on the bad side) to come when you’re like 19. He better be out there practicing next year to redeem himself.

T3 -
It will be in Crabtree’s highlight package, though. Yeah, next year, that guy could come back and have the season of a lifetime. Still though, you’ll always hear about how he missed the pass and sent Oklahoma to the championship game.

Tim Tebow is not the best college football player ever. I would rate Vince Young or even Michael Vick on the list before I would say Tim Tebow.
What Vince Young did to Matt Leinart and USC in that 200 pass/200 rushing TITLE game was one of the greatest feats in the history of college football. In that same year, Vince led a Texas team that was averaging 50 points a game throughout the season.
Could Tim Tebow succeed in the NFL? I think he could. However, it depends on the type of coordinator and offensive system he has. Plus, he will need a franchise RB and WRs who are game changers that can catch any pass thrown their way (i.e Chad Johnson, Fitzgerald, Boldin..)
The thing about Tebow is that the media won’t criticize him as much for running the ball 10 times a game. His football I.Q. won’t be assaulted on a weekly basis by the mainstream sports media.
Tebow is 6′3 245 and he runs 4.5, but he relishes contact and that’s a part of who he is as a player. Tebow can throw as well, but some suggest he would get killed on the NFL if he runs. I disagree to a certain extent. Tebow respects the fact he could get hurt, but he is a risk-taker on the field just like Vick, Vince, McNabb and other mobile QBs. Tebow doesn’t have that breakaway speed, but he was more of a grinder who will pick of 6 or 7 yards that will lead to occasional first downs, keep his mistakes to a minimum and be able to manage games.

The Worldwide Leader gotta say SOMETHIN’. What, Pacman ain’t made it rain while shootin’ up a club or somethin’? Gotta say SOMETHIN’? Journalistic integrity? Quoi? Like Gonzalez’ attitude toward the Geneva Conventions, that’s just quaint.
December 11th, 2008 at 10:30 pm
Tebow isn’t close to being the best college player of all time. Herschel Walker was Georgia’s entire offense for 3 years. He faced 8-9 men in the box on every play and still averaged 1800 rushing yds a season. Are you shitting me? Tebow better than that? Not just no, but Fuck No! lol

Thanks for posting the Tommie Frazier vid because I for one forgot how truly great he was at Nebraska. Watching Letterman one night after the ‘Huskers destroyed the Gators in the ‘95(?) Fiesta Bowl, Letterman said, “This just in. Tommie Frazier just scored again.” Classic.
Tebow’s a good to great player but not the greatest of all time even if he cops another Heisman. In my lifetime, I’ve seen greatness in Herschel Walker, Rocket Ismail, Dan Marino, Charlie Ward, and Calvin Johnson with even Colt McCoy and Michael Crabtree for oood measure. That’s not even nodding my head to the defensive side of the ball either.
Tebow is the football counterpart of Tyler Hansborough in that when all’s said and done both will be remembered more for their so-called college greatness that was media driven because of the great teams they played on than anything else they’ll accomplish athletically.

The question I have for everyone…Is Colt McCoy a better collegiate player than Vince Young? Young’s past is getting lost in the cynical present. He murdered a Braylon Edwards (3tds in the Rose Bowl) and Michael Hart Michigan squad and did the exact same thing the next season to Matt Lineart and Reggie Bush to the tune of 200/200. I can’t stress the importance of making sure Vince Young’s amazing college exploits remain close or he’ll be forgotten like Tommie Frazier. Tim Tebow is a great college player, but he is not the standard and shouldn’t be seen as such. If you listen to Tebow sycophants, Chris Leak never plunged in the swamp.
December 12th, 2008 at 10:01 am
Mizzo,
It’s a shame that Chris Leak’s collegiate accomplishments were soon forgotten two minutes after Florida had beaten Ohio State in the national championship game. Subsequently Tim Tebow was elevated to immediate stardom and college deity status as one of the best of all time.

The ultimate question of legacy boils down to team accomplishment. You don’t get the brass ring for being a back up on a championship team. You don’t get the breass ring for getting your ass handed to you by Michigan in your bowl game last year. You don’t even get the brass ring for losing to Mississippi. You don’t get the brass ring when your best passes are two-yard jump passes over blitzing lines and your best runs are three-yard scampers using the spread offense.
Like I said - this shit’s hilarious. Dude is good, but he’s not even Top 100. He might be Top 250 — maybe — If I’m feeling charitable.

It’s amazing how great a QB can look when he’s surrounded by superior talent. Ken Dorsey was a God at Miami. He could hand off to All-Pro’s Clinton Portis, Willis Magahee, and Frank Gore (Yes they played in the same backfield). He could throw to All Pro’s Andre Johnson, Santana Moss, Reggie Wayne, Jeremy Shockey, and Kellen Winslow. Once he got away from those All Pros, he became just another QB. The greatest of all time will transcend their teammates, not owe all of their success to them.

This isn’t a knock on Frazier, Young, Tebow, Orlando Pace or anyone else - they can all be in the conversation for the college GOAT - but that convo has got to end with Herschel
December 12th, 2008 at 11:28 pm
Good point D.
James I’m cool with that. Tony D was nice and OJ was incredible but Herschel was the best I’ve ever seen.
December 15th, 2008 at 9:06 pm
nobody even mentioned Barry Sanders!
December 17th, 2008 at 9:29 pm
Tim Tebow isn’t the greatest football of all time, but to say Michael Crabtree is better is silly, his offense is even more gimmicky than Tebow’s. To Mizzo it annoys me that people swept away Chris Leak’s accomplishments too, but Tim Tebow was more than just a simple backup. Without him The Gators don’t win the National Championship, not arguable, and fact is Tebow is a better Quarterback now than Leak was.
December 17th, 2008 at 9:46 pm
To Temple,
You can’t prove any points by using gross exaggerations. What players haven’t lost games that they should’ve won. Tim Tebow has broken big runs before, but as someone pointed out that’s not his game, and out of all the passes he thrown he’s only done the jump pass thing 3 times. The media goes overboard with praising him, but some of you are doing the same in reverse.
December 18th, 2008 at 10:20 pm
Tommie Frazier was Tim Tebow before Tim Tebow was a rapidly swimming sperm. It’s crazy how Frazier gets no respect.
December 18th, 2008 at 10:54 pm
Tony Dorsett to me is the greatest college football player ever because he was a one-man gang who led Pittsburgh to the 1976 national championship and set the NCCA rushing record that stood for 23 years. Im Tebow benefits from other great players unlike Dorsett.

THIS IS WHY ESPN IS A JOKE AND YOU SHOULD NEVER PAY ATTENTION TO THE NETWORK. OF COURSE THEY ALWAYS PLAY UP THE GREAT WHITE HOPES.
December 22nd, 2008 at 8:53 pm
What you guys don’t get is that it isn’t just the great things that Tebow brings to the field, locker room, huddle, etc. It’s that he is actually a true role model. Someone that any league would love to have as a representative. I wouldn’t count on Tebow “making it rain” or shooting himself in the leg in a club at 2am or having any illegitimate children any time soon. He’s the whole package. Great athlete, great teammate and more importantly a good representation of what college athletics is all about.

Was it a blind man who wrote this article? Tim Tebow is far better than ALL the players he named! Time to eat crow Mr. Blind, Deaf and Dumb.
