Florida vs. Oklahoma: So What?

This has nothing to do with the players…are we clear? Look, I’d rather do a post of what’s going through the minds of 80′s futuristic grand ladies swinging on their front porch to the beat and crocheting doilies on chill than talk about this game. The fact that I holler Go Blue is irrelevant…trust.

The way they settle Division 1 (or whatever they call it these days) College football is the biggest farce there is. I will not be moved by all the debate of playoff vs. bowl system because it’s all bullshit. Every single bit of it.

What competition in the entire world’s existence (besides the little kiddies of course) doesn’t settle their sport with a true champion at the end of making so much money? Every game and every player matters and the media is a big blame as well. Why is there a need to mention class when speaking of Tebow and Bradford? Can someone please answer this?

What…no other college football player plays with passion, is dedicated to being the best on and off the field or is White?

Let’s get real here and put it all in perspective.

Please.

College Football is now the Golden Boy’s pimp. It’s bigger than that. What are we telling our children?

As evidenced by some of the bowls, the Big 12 looks to be overrated, if I hear one more pundit say Tim Tebow is the best off all time I’m gonna snap and USC IS THE BEST TEAM ANYWAY. Oh another thing and mark it down now, Terrelle Pryor will not win the Heisman Trophy next year despite being the natural next in line sophomore to win the award. Until this sport does the right thing–or Gaston is leading Michigan to the title–I can’t talk about it at length. Where does the conversation lead anyway?

For the record: Oklahoma 35, Florida 31.

  1. Co Co says:

    Florida will win this game.

  2. Mizzo says:

What’s the bet Co Co? You falling for the hype again? I’ll learn ya one of these days.

  3. Co Co is right. The only actual defense OU has seen is TCU, and their defense seems to not give up fewer than the 20s. Florida can go with time-consuming drives to keep Bradford, Gresham, and Joaquin Iglesias off the field, and the Gators’ D is much improved this year.

Considering Bob Stoops’ habit of blowing his last four BCS games, I don’t see that changing. Tebow is merely a cog in the system — a good one, a valuable one — but I’m gonna need a barf bag to make it through the brown-nosing he’ll get tonight.

  4. Mizzo says:

I don’t know why I’m falling for this conversation, because it all makes me sick, but USC is the best team so anything else is immaterial. I was just getting on Co Co because she’s uh…Co Co.

The hype points me to think Oklahoma will win this game despite their much maligned defense and Tebow will get stuck the way Michigan did to him last year.

  5. Co Co says:

USC ain’t sh*t! LOL You wanna talk about hype???? USC is the epitome of a team that is always hyped. And I’m always down for the SEC Mike.
This game will be over by halftime.

  6. Temple3 says:

I totally agree Mizzo. I haven’t been amped for this game in the least. I’m a lifelong Oklahoma and Florida State (well – since the days of Fred Jones, Marvin’s big bro) and Florida GATOR HATER. Nothing. No juice. Zip. Why?

    1) I believe Tim Tebow is uniquely overrated in the sense that:
    a. He was a bit player in the Chris Leak led team of a few years ago.
    b. He was utterly wrecked by Michigan in last year’s bowl game where Urban The Great had his play-calling lunch spoon fed to him.
    c. This year’s SEC squads were uncharacteristically one-dimensional. LSU had no d-line for the 1st time in a decade. Georgia had two cats looking at the front door: Stafford and Moreno. Alabama was an offensive slumbernaught. Tennessee and Auburn were in the midst of saying goodbye to coaches. It was a fiasco down south — and FLA lost to Mi-crooked letter-crooked letter…you know the rest.

    2) Bob Stoops has been BLASTED in big games of late. USC, LSU and Boise State have made “Big Game Bob” look unprepared. I’m sure he thanks his lucky stars EVERY DAY for scuh-ruhbs like Chris Weinke.

    3) Oklahoma’s best player ain’t playin’ and it ain’t Sam Bradford. All of this spread offense gar-bahghe is enough to make a purist puke. I’d be better off cranking up a round of NCAA Football 2008 on the old PS2.

If nothing else, I’d like to see Oklahoma’s safety Nick Harris showcase a little BOOM BASH on Florida’s speedy, but NFL-anemic WR corps.

    ——————————–

I’m not buying what USC is selling. They have their chance every year — every year. They play in the punk ass Pac-10. They stub their toe…every year. Oregon State, Stanford, UCLA. WTF? Whatever. Them bastards need to pull an Auburn and call me in the morning. Go 13-0 and we can talk OR they’ll have to wait for a playoff just like the rest of us.

USC has the team that most closely resembles an NFL squad. They clearly have the best talent, but the “game” as its currently constructed is uniquely suited for them to get bored and take themselves out of the title picture. They have no one to blame but themselves. They need to knuckle up and keep their young asses out of the Grotto.

  7. Co Co says:

Yeah, what Temple said about USC. I have no time to speak all eloquently this mid morning. LOL

  8. Co Co says:

And yeah the SEC teams sucked this year, but they’ll be the “winners” of a third straight national title after tonight. :)

  9. Temple3 says:

I meant to say Oklahoma and FSU fan. Whoops. A few down years lead to Freudian slips.

  10. Mizzo says:

Why did I post this shit? My head hurts already.

Co Co what’s the bet? Put up or shut up baby girl.

  11. Mizzo says:

Temple you made my point for me. USC will have the most players drafted this coming NFL draft. I totally agree they are bored with the regular season. I truly feel if there was a playoff we will all see a dynasty we haven’t seen in sports in a while.

I’m not posting the Adam Jones news. He hasn’t been worthy of all this attention at any stage in his career. Quit with the emails people. It ain’t happenin’.

  12. GrandNubian says:

    Yall crazy……lol :-)

I will say this, Oklahoma haven’t seen the type of speed FLorida will showcase tonight on defense. They have about 14 cats on that defense that run 4.3 and 4.4s respectively!!!

I hate Florida but I live in SEC Country (Atlanta), so I gotta root for the SEC on this one.

    ———————————–

Oh yeah…..what T3 said about USC. Overrated to the 3rd power. If they played in the SEC I might give them their respect. Otherwise……..

  13. Mizzo says:

How are they overrated when they put the most talent in the league? I just think they are more preoccupied with the NFL than anything.

USC is not overrated. They just lack focus. Quizz Brian Westbrooked ‘em.

It ain’t their fault their conference is wick, wick, whack.

  14. Co Co says:

The fact that their conference is whack is the main reason they look so good and they can’t even manage to get out of there unscathed! And yeah they put a lot of talent into the league, but um so what. Not all of them are great NFLers.
This game isn’t even worth betting on. Oklahoma can score better than most, but so can Florida. The biggest difference is that Florida bothers to stop people on occasion. I’m not even going to watch this game. lol And Mike of course you know something about rooting for overrated teams considering the conference Big Blue plays in. ;)

  15. Mizzo says:

Put up or shut up Co Co. This ain’t about Michigan sweet potato pie. Quit with all that talk.

Don’t make me come down there girl! ;)

  16. Co Co says:

Hahaha. You can make the bet Mike.

  17. Mizzo says:

I’m thinking eggs, grits, sausage and biscuits. Yeah something along those lines.

I know you can cook. Don’t front.

  18. GrandNubian says:

    Mizz,

They’re overrated because they don’t play in the SEC….. :-)

  19. GrandNubian says:

Also, I wouldn’t say that they put the MOST talent in the league. I’m sure the “U” (Miami) would have something to say about that. Now for the past maybe 5-6 years, you could definitely make the argument that they have put some ballers in the NFL….but the MOST talent? I don’t know….i’m not sure on that one.

  20. Co Co says:

Yes I can cook. I will cook you a big meal the next time you are in Atlanta if Oklahoma wins. ;)

  21. Mizzo says:

    Good. I’m down for that.

GN: They are one of the few schools who go into anyone’s hot bed and jack their prized talent and they do this every year. About 30% of Miami’s talent comes from Luke’s league.

  22. Jerold Wells Jr says:

@CoCo,…. you’re right Florida will win this game.
Oklahoma is without there #1 running back and I think that will hurt. Oklahoma needs to win a ball control, fewer possessions the better type ball game. I don’t see them winning a shoot out…. which is exactly what I think this is gonna turn into. Fla 45 – Okla 41

@Mizzo….. yes USC is the best team…… maybe…. they lost to what turned out to be an average OSU team on the road. Florida lost, on a botched XP no less, to what turned out to be an above average Ole Miss team on the road. SEC is stronger top to bottom than the Pac 10 without a doubt.

USC v FLA would be a barn burner with the edge going to FLA since Young and Pryor exposed the USC defense’s achilles heal….. a scrambling QB. Plus USC’s offense is only good this year. Not great like in years past.

@Temple…. Tebow = Good as advertised. Overrated just isn’t fair to the kid. Like Mizzo says, they see their sons. He’s one of the best short yardage backs in the nation. He’s progressed from a role player on that Chris Leak led team to the bona fide superstar. Classic drop back passer he is not, but the kid wins. Alot. He’s dealt with some of the best defenses in the country and so far has emerged intact. The numbers are there.

    And he wasn’t exactly a slouch against Michigan last year. 17-33, 154, 3TD’s, no INTs/ 16 for 57, 1TD. The D couldn’t touch the Wolverines O in that game.

And for the record Pryor’s better at the same stage in his career.

  23. Kirk Mitchell says:

    To Mizzo, and Temple

You guys hate Tebow just because the Mainstream loves him so much. You guys don’t even give analysis on why he’s overrated. A bit player? Without him the Gators don’t win the BCS in 2006, and Chris Leak will admit as much and for the last the guy Pryor is not better at the same stage.

  24. Mizzo says:

Kirk bring ya ass back here in a couple of years and lets talk then.

Check the tape of the game. How many big plays did Tebow produce in the championship. He played to please the boosters maybe?

Black quarterbacks have been doing the things Tebow’s been doing for years and never this glare.

When he goes for 200/200 tonight like Vince, then I’ll give him his props but the man ain’t really done anything different.

Will he run over you at the goal line?

    Yeah.

Is he a very very good leader?

    Damn straight.

Has he won the championship as a starter?

    Hell no.

Were there other qb’s who have won it all and not received all the slobber this dude has?

    Oh yeah.

What was his record last year when he put up all those stats even though there was a 2000 yard rusher?

    8-4.

I think his longest rush to date was the one he had against Michigan last year. I could be mistaken.

Is Tim Tebow a very good college football player?

    Yes.

Is he the best college football player in the nation?

    Hell no.

Were those three quarterbacks the best players in the nation?

    Uh…no.

Michael Crabtree hasn’t received the shine he deserves. Has he smashed all kinds of records coming in?

    Damn right.

    What year is he?

    Sophomore.

Does he play with passion, is a good kid, works out like a beast and goes to class?

    Yessir.

Why doesn’t he get the shine?

    Got me dude.

After all he did make the biggest play of the season ala Desmond Howard and still didn’t get into the top five.

  25. Mizzo says:

How was Pryor not a better quarterback at the same stage cat?

What was Pryor’s record as a starter?

Tebow starred on the bench as a gimmick.

  26. origin says:

    Amen Mizzo.

    Kirk popping that trash.

I like Oklahoma to win………..but who knows my picks been bad the last 3 months. And that Heisman jinx might get bradford.

Anyway I picked Oklahoma at the begining of the season.

Oh and Tebow is so over hyped its unreal.

Better then Bo, Hershell, Ward, Vince and Barry Sanders………LOL!!!

These writers and analyst must be smoking dope.

  27. Miranda says:

The end is near…..did y’all see Bill Belichek at the game sitting up there smiling and looking……happy??

  28. origin says:

    Shoops choking @ss.

  29. Kirk Mitchell says:

    To Mizzo

Pat White got all kinds of love from ESPN when he finished his career, as did Vince Young, and Michael Vick, but overall you’re right about the lack of coverage.

Since when is it a requirement to go 200/200 and be considered a great QB? although Tebow did just go 200/100

Chris Leak didn’t produce any big plays in the championship game either.

He just won a championship as a starter.

You’re right the three quarterbacks aren’t best and neither is Crabtree whose offense is even more gimmicky than Florida’s The best player in college football is Percy Harvin.

Crabtree smashed records in an offense that throws the ball 60 times a game. This is not to say he’s not a good player, but he isn’t the best, and his big play doesn’t matter when you get smashed by Oklahoma, and smashed by Ole Miss.

Does it matter that Tebow’s TDs are from the goal line? 50 yards or 1 yard it’s all six points.

Yes, Tebow was better than Pryor at the same stage. Tebow threw for 500 yards and five TDs and rushed for another 600 yards 8 TDs and he was a backup. Pryor started the better part of 11 games and threw for 1300 yards 12 TDs and ran for 631 yards and 6 TDs, and being able see him play often he is very raw, and takes alot of bad sacks. I think he will great, in fact better than Tebow, but at the same stage Tebow was better.

  30. Kirk Mitchell says:

    To Origin

I do agree that the Tebow hype is obsessive, I had change the channel a few times when the announcers started beating us over the head about how great of a person he is.

  31. HarveyDent says:

Agree with Kirk about the Tebow hype tonight. When Tebow caught an unsportsmanlike for doing the Gator chomp, Thom Brennaman actually had the nerve to say that was probably the first bad thing the kid had done in his life. I just shook my head because the hyperbole is sickening because the MSM thinks there’s some kind of a mission to turn these kids into messiahs. I’m sure Tebow’s a good kid. I really think Sam Bradford can be that good in the NFL. Colt McCoy is tougher than boot leather. However, their bios are no more compelling than Jaquizz Rogers’ or Percy Harvin’s or Michael Crabtree’s.

Screw it. All my fault for wasting four hours of my life watching that game instead of scrubbing out my bathtub.

    Blaaaaah on all their houses.

  32. GrandNubian says:

What did I tell yall about the SEC? What did I tell yall about the speed Fla. has on defense? OU hasn’t seen that type of speed all season.

Now, do I think Fla. should be National Champs? Probably not because the only “clear-cut” way to determine that would’ve been having a playoff system.

  33. Mizzo says:

USC would have murdered both of those teams…possibly if you put both together. There would have been all kinds of pressure in Tebow’s face. Both defenses looked smallish…not the case at USC.

Utah got screwed and somebody stole the grease.

Kirk that’s all I’m trying to get across regarding Tebow. It’s not the player, it’s the hype.

I have to disagree with you regarding the fawning of Black quarterbacks…because it’s never the same.

Randy Moss could possibly be one of the best college players of all time and the hype was nothing near this.

I spoke of 200/200 mainly because it is the standard. I don’t expect anyone to duplicate something so sickdiculous. I don’t hear too many people in my field regard his performance as the best championship performance of all time–in any sport.

    That’s what it was.

    Short memories…

Sam Bradford won the Heisman, but I’d take Tebow’s heart any day. There wasn’t enough umph to satisfy a championship game.

I’m seeing Detmer and Garcia and I don’t think he’s as good as either of them.

Crabtree IMO had two great seasons and legacy wise, what does he have to show for it besides one Biletnikoff?

He’s doubled and tripled every game and still gets his.

Harvin is good, but I’m sticking with Mike. Like Temple stated in my Donovan piece, it’s difficult for receivers coming into the league, but the young fella looks like a can’t miss.

Quarterbacks winning this award based on having the ball in their hands all the time is a farce. I’d say the same thing if my son was up for the award…well not publicly ;)

This system is cheating the fans of the sport. I can’t watch it and that’s crazy. I love college football but not having a true champion is like having the baddest woman alive slam the door in your face after a great date when all you wanted was to come in and talk.

  34. origin says:

Don’t worry the same nonsene phrases will be used to describe Tyler Hansborugh this year in college basketball.

So we have 2 more months of this mess.

Tyler Hansborough and Tebow are the greatest college athletes of all time if you listen to them.

Oh and after Vince’s 200/200 game they (media) were hating the next week.

  35. Co Co says:

Mike USC wouldn’t have mrudered anyone. You’re being sucked in by the media on this USC hype.

  36. Mizzo says:

No you hail from the SEC. I hear no one in the media saying USC is the best team. They’re too busy swinging on fifteens.

Do your loyalty ma. I can’t hate.

I can’t stand USC, but they were the best team this year and probably every year.

You can say the same for Utah (this year).

    Sorry.

    You can have your win.

Congrats…but it ain’t true. You ever in Philly, ditch the cheese steaks and come get some real grub.

It wouldn’t be true if USC was declared the champ.

There’s no playoff, just a bunch of cojones azul.

    This discussion is so frustrating.

  37. Co Co says:

Are you kidding me? The media isnt claiming USC as the best? The old guy who works with Kirk , his name eludes me right now immediately after the game said USC was the best and they’ve been saying it since before USC beat an overrated Penn State team. USC is the media darling every year. If they’d quit losing to pansies then they wouldn’t have to campaign for a number one spot at the end of the year.
Bottom line, SEC is where it’s at right now homie! ;)

  38. GrandNubian says:

    …yeah, what Co Co said…… :-)

  39. Temple3 says:

I don’t think USC is the best team this year. The last 2 times that USC has gone on the road to play Oregon State, they’ve lost. They are no prizes for giving in to boredom. If they can get OSU off their schedule, maybe they can get in the conversation. I wouldn’t rank them number 1.

Back in the day, I remember hearing a stat that during the Steelers SB run in the 1970′s, they were something like 50-1 vs. sub .500 teams. They beat who they were supposed to beat. USC does not beat who they’re supposed to beat. Stanford, UCLA, Oregon State (2x), Oregon — that’s not greatness. In that conference, they’ve gotta run the table.

Remember how dominant Florida State and Miami were before joining conferences of regular opponents with comparable budgets? The PAC-10, post-Don James and Terry Donohue, has become so stratified. Its USC and everyone else. Cal and Oregon have been tough over the past decade, but that’s not a conference…SC doesn’t even play Oregon every year.

Texas has a stronger argument than USC. Texas barely lost a tight game and played infinitely better competition during the season. Were it not for Bob Stoopid Stoops’ ineptitude, OU probably wins that game. He snatched defeat from the jaws of victory. With that said, I don’t think OU is very good. I’ve seen this movie at least three times — prolific passing QB (Hypel, White, Bradford), 5 fast receivers, play-makers in secondary (Roy Williams — Nick Harris), and an awful showing in a big game. Were it not for Chris Weinke and his unparalleled mediocrity, Stoops would be winless in BIG BAD BOWL GAMES.

Mizzo — we agree about Utah. After what I saw from them, I don’t think they’d have much trouble with either Florida or Oklahoma. Hindsight is 20/20, but in the absence of a playoff, its all we’ve got.

After watching last night’s game, I am firmly convinced that Tim Tebow sucks. He’s a great college player in a great system. His unique physical talents (which really don’t include passing or running very far) work for UF. The keys to the success of that team, though, are guys like Percy Harvin and the defensive coaching of Charlie Strong. The other folks are along for the ride.

  40. GrandNubian says:

    ….yeah, what T3 said. :-)

  41. GrandNubian says:

On another note, I just came back from having lunch with my wife at Perimeter Mall in Atlanta. We walked around and went into a few stores before we left there. I just so happen to go into this sports merchandise store and they had on ESPN 1st take w/ Skip Bayless & Stephen A. Smith.

What do you think the topic was?

Yup, “Is Tim Tebow the greatest college football player ever!”.

Of course, Skip was riding Tebow’s 1s & 2s but i didn’t stick around long enough to hear what Stephen A. had to say, being that I no longer watch BSPN. But come on, Teebow the greatest college player EVER!!!

Give me a freekin’ break already.

My, how soon people forget about Vince Young.

  42. Mizzo says:

USC would be tough to beat in a tournament. Yeah they aren’t the juggernaut they have been recently so they slip up every now and again but they would finish near the top–if not the top–in the SEC or Big 12 every year. They have too much talent. I’m not ridin’ their jock. This is business…

  43. Temple3 says:

In a tournament, I think USC would be the toughest out. They run the offense least subject to “bad days.” It’s not a spread. Their defense is the most sophisticated. They’d be tough — and I don’t think seeing them one or twice during a tourney would help many teams because you’d still have to matchup. But…

My question is: Would USC become the modern version of 1980′s DePaul basketball? Would the Aguirre, Cumminngs, Dillard, Bradshaw, Comegys first round flameouts continue in a playoff format?

  44. T-Time says:

Mizzo- it PAINS me to hear you talk about USC like that….it really does. I mean “stubbing your toe” against Oregon State…they lost. Jacquizz gave them hell and just because they beat Penn State pretty good theyre the best??? Come on…thats a little MSMish (Lee Corso is his name)

I agree about the playoff…should be a playoff. Utah, USC, Utah, Florida, Oklahoma, Texas… ’nuff said.

Just a question I’m posing: I know OK State lost their bowl game to Oregon, but before that…they’d dropped games to the #2 and #1 ranked teams in the nation and got NO love…explanation???

And now for the finale: Tim Tebow.

I struggled with actually diggin Tebow when he was a freshman because cats were jockin and my man CLeak was puttin in WORK! THEN, LEAK DIDNT GET DRAFTED…that REALLY pissed me off. So I was anti-Tebow to a degree. But I recognize ball-players. And that’s EXACTLY what Tebow is. Yes, the press is a little excessive. And wouldnt be the same if he were Black (witness VY). BUT Tebow is a helluva player. And his off-field exploits should be highlighted. I dont disagree with that. But it should be other cats in the limelight too. I just did a story on Akeem Jordan of the Eagles and he used to visit juvenile homes while he was at JMU (D 1AA). No one prolly knew that…and there are probably plenty others that do the same. But Tebow is an excellent college player. You can not deny him that at all.

That being said, Ernie Davis or Barry Sanders was the best college player of all-time, Mike Crabtree (who I’ve been on for like 3 YEARS) should probably be the #2 pick in the draft IMO, Colt McCoy is a better QB than Tebow, and Harvin was MOP of the Chip…

I can see how Tebow is a polarizing figure…But Mizzo u killin me with the USC talk man…

  45. Mizzo says:

Only based on their talent brotha–and their coach.

Look, I could care less about USC. Seriously, but I’m ridin’ with talent any day.

But you of all people know what I say: “Hard work beats talent, when talent fails to work hard.”

USC flubbed against Jaquizz so now they sit home but…

Bradford looked shook last night. How the hell could those two teams play for the championship?

I promised myself I wasn’t going to post a college piece because of the non playoff. This whole thing is the most ridiculous piece of bs ever. How can you not have a playoff?

Now I gotta headache. I’m going to bed. Have a good weekend my people. NFL picks are posted.

  46. Kirk Mitchell says:

Mizzo, I can agree with most of that, I personally despise any off the field stories positive or negative about players, because ultimately they don’t matter. I can’t agree with USC though why would they beat Oklahoma or especially Florida? That great defense hasn’t been tested, and they’re average on offense, and it was clear that Alabama was disinterested in playing in the Sugar Bowl against Utah, but yeah we need a playoff.

  47. MODI says:

I do like positive off-field stories, but the coverage of the title game on Tebow was nauseatingly over-the-top. I don’t know if I ever heard anything like that before. I am sure Tebow is a good guy, but just one day I’d like an announcer talk about Stephon Marbury’s legendary contributions off the court.

And even if we reduced goodwill to Florida football players Derrick Brooks has spent a hall of fame career both on and off the field — and Tebow got more pub in one night than DB ever has.

This is not tebow’s fault of course.
