Live Blog NFC Divisional Playoff: Philadelphia Eagles vs. New York Giants
It’s almost that time. Little hot I’m not working the game (won’t happen again, there’s an inspiration in everything you just gotta find it), but I’d rather do this than drink mad grog, eat a thousand wings and check out all the fine lovelies that just might happen to be batting their pretty little eyes my way at the local joint. Ah…the simple things in life.
Forgetting all that, Everything has fell into place for the Eagles beginning with Plax’s unfortunate accident. The odds against everything happening the way it has, must to be in the single percent digits. That the Cardinals won yesterday is even more perplexing because Philly matches up well with AZ and Carolina was the team everybody here in Philly feared. Of course the Eagles have to get by the Giants, but this is a rivalry game. Throw out everythang.
A chance to repeat this day is at stake:
I picked the Giants 23-17. Hold me to it!
Let’s Get It!!
****
First thought is damn…why Joe Buck? Damnit man!
The first thing I thought of when the ball fell off the tee was damn…here comes a run back.
David Akers…the kicker…saves a touchdown.
1st: Steve Smith was wide open. He would have caught one from BDawk though.
2nd: Jacobs for seven…hmm he better stay on the ground.
3rd and 3…no haps for Ward. Dawkins on the blitz. Kick it baby kick it.
4th: Giants go for it with Jacobs and convert. Looks cold as shit out there.
1st: Darcey Johnson with the catch on an out route. 1st down at the eleven. Brain Dawkins with the stop after the two yard gain.
2nd: Mike Patterson stuffs Brandon Jacobs. 3rd and 8.
3rd: Stewart Bradley makes a nice tackle from the middle linebacker position. The Giants played the match up there in hopes of getting the mismatch.
Bradshaw’s 65 yard return to open the game gives the Giants 3. Best case scenario for the Eagles on the road. If the Giants scored a touchdown, the crowd would have been hype.
3-0 Giants.
Quentin Demps for 19 on the return.
Whatcha gonna do Eagles on your first possession.
1st: McNabb on the roll out to DeSean Jackson for 10.
1st: Westbrook stuffed for 3 yard loss.
2nd: McNabb dumps off to Buckhalter for another 3 yard loss.
3rd: McNabb pass incomplete to Curtis.
4th: Sav Rocca punts after false start. 4th and 21.
Hickson 18yd return but with 2 flags. Block in the back and another on Kenny Phillips for shoving the gunner after he was out of bounds. 29 yard penalty.
Giants second possession.
1st: Asante Samuel gets a pick! returns it to the 2.
Eagles second possession.
1st and goal: Westbrook stopped.
2nd and goal: McNabb throws out of bounds.
Wow defensive hold on Michael Johnson.
1st and goal: Westbrook leaps to no avail.
2nd and goal: Donovan McNabb on the keeper for the score!!
Eli Manning’s interception leads to Eagles score.
7-3 Eagles.
Samuel’s 7th career playoff interception tying him with former teammate Rodney Harrison.
Akers kicks off to Bradshaw who returns 20 yards to the 20.
1st: Bradshaw for no gain.
2nd and 10: Ward for 2.
3rd and 8: Manning throws 12 yards to Steve Smith.
1st and 10: Ward for no gain. This is a game I would love to play in. Not for the boys.
2nd and 10: Ward for 1yd.
3rd and 9: The Giants better get creative or Eli will end up with happy feet later in the game. Eli throws a duck to Amani Toomer. Incomplete.
45 yard punt to DeSean Jackson for no return. Considine block in the back penalty.
Eagles possession starts at the 10.
1st and 10: Westbrook for nothin’. Loss of 1.
2nd and 11: L.J. Smith with the flinch. False start.
2nd and 15: Buckhalter for 5.
3rd and 10: Big play here. McNabb with pressure but gets it off incomplete to Jason Avant.
Rocca with the punt.
Considine with the speed knock on Bradshaw!
Illegal block in the back on R.W. McQuarters.
1st and 10: Brandon Jacobs for 11.
After 1 quarter, Eagles 7, Giants 3.
1st and 10: Jacobs cuts back for 2.
2nd and 8: Eagles on the blitz. Stuffs Jacobs again.
3rd and 7: Eagles blitz again. Manning throws long but misses Steve Smith on the bomb.
Jeff Feagles punts and Terrell Thomas makes a great play to prohibit the touch back.
Eagles begin at their own five. Time for a big drive.
1st and 10: Westbrook for 1 after Giants blitz.
2nd and 9: Giants blitz. McNabb in the pocket. Justin Tuck on his ass….tosses it out and gets an intentional grounding. Safety.
Eagles 7, Giants 5.
Expect anything different from these two teams?
Sav Rocca with the free kick into the wind.
Bradshaw tripped up by Tracy White at the 30.
Giants possession.
This is a dangerous time for the Eagles. Gotta play tight D here because the Giants have the wind. Keep stuffing the run Jimmy. The key here is for Dawkins to guess right on when to get in the box.
1st and 10: Ward for 4.
2nd and 6: Manning to Kevin Boss for the first down.
1st and 10: Ward for 3 on the right side.
2nd and 10: Manning almost throws a pick, but Stewart Bradley gets called for illegal hands to the face of Sean O’Hara.
1st and 10 at the 50: Manning throws 21 yards to Boss. Bradley covering.
1st and 10: Jacobs for nothin’.
2nd and 10: Whack ass pass from Manning after Eagles blitz. Incomplete.
3rd and 10: Manning incomplete to the left.
4th and 10: 46 yard field goal try.
MISSES IT! Wide to the right.
Eagles still lead 7-5.
Philadelphia has to sustain a drive here despite the Giants pressure. No excuses. They dodged a bullet there.
1st and 10: Buckhalter for nothing.
2nd and 10: Brett Celek catches a five yd pass from McNabb.
3rd and 5: Crowd is into it.
Timeout Eagles: 30 second.

1st and 10: Westbrook 2 yards on right run.
2nd and 8: Westbrook runs nicely for 7.
3rd and 1: Oh Oh…Buckhalter converts! Wow. Eagles now 2-4 on third down conversions.
1st and 10: Westbrook for 1. Credit McNabb for getting the ball off to Brian.
2nd and 9: McNabb throws through the hands of DeSean Jackson.
3rd and 9: McNabb 4-8 for 18 yards. McNabb intercepted after Giants blitz. Amounts to a punt.
1st and 10 Giants: Jacobs for 24. Sheldon Brown makes nice tackle.
1st and 10: Derrick Ward for 5.
2nd and 5 at the 50: Manning hits Boss down to the 26 for 25 after Bradley falls down.
1st and 10: Jacobs for 5.
2:00 minute warning.
Eagles 7, Giants 5.
Giants driving.
2nd and 5:
Refs take 5 yards away because clock hit 2 minute warning.
1st and 10: Manning hits Hickson for nothing.
Eagles offside.
1st and 5: Manning throws crazy to Toomer. He’s not looking good today. Maybe he remembers that speed knock his rookie year here.

Giants call timeout.
3rd and 5: Eagles blitz. Derrick Ward short a yard after 4 yard quick pass.
4th and 1: Carney out for field goal. 35 yard try.
Carney good from 35.
Giants take lead, 8-7.
Tynes kick off to Demps to the 25.
As the announcers talk about Tennessee, how come no one brings up Young?
1st and 10: Celek drops pass from McNabb.
2nd and 10: DeSean Jackson catches pass for 1st down to Eagles 39.
1st and 10: 1:13: Avant catches 5 yard pass.
2nd and 5: Westbrook catches pass to Giants 49. 47 seconds left.
1st and 10: Avant catches to 34 for 15 yards on square in.
1st and 10: McNabb throws to Jackson for 9 to the Giants 25.
2nd and 1: McNabb throws away.
3rd and 1: Play of the game so far. McNabb better get this with his arm or legs.
Westbrook gets conversion running short to the left.
1st and 10: McNabb clocks it.
2nd and 10: McNabb runs for 9 but Antonio Pierce gets called for illegal contact penalty.
1st and goal, 10 seconds left: Pass incomplete to Jackson.
Akers on for a try: He’s third all time in playoff kicks 26-30.
Akers good on field goal.
Eagles 10, Giants 8.
Origin posts a video of Aikman getting knocked the eff out!
My thoughts are the Eagles should win this game. If they continue to make plays on third down then the Giants are in trouble. Eli looks shaky as hell and does anyone but me see the happy feet coming?
There’s no way the Eagles should lose this game with the wind in the fourth and the ball in the third. This is where Donovan wants to be. If he wants to create a favorable legacy, it has to start with this half. Remember our talk Donovan. Do it brotha.
- HarveyDent Says:
January 11th, 2009 at 7:43 pm eThoughts on the second half is that the Eagles’ D just needs to keep lighting up the G’s offense. For the Eagles’ O, they need to spread it out and let the WR corps be a factor. Once and if that happens, lanes will open up for the running game.Eli’s only going to hurt the Giants if he has to toss the ball up. The blitzes are going to keep coming and Eli will start to chuck and duck.
Good points 2 Face.
This is the problem I have with the perception of McNabb.
He’s definitely he better quarterback, but you wouldn’t think so by the media’s handling of him throughout his career. His arm strength is key in the third. If he can keep the ball away from the Giants here, the Eagles win.
- michelle Says:
January 11th, 2009 at 7:47 pm eMizzo,The Eagles can’t turn over the ball in the second half. Defense has been good so they have to stay focused and get more pressure on Eli. The Giants miss Plaxico and it shows. Eli can’t throw good passes with the wind and don’t have a receiver that can go get the DAMN ball. If the Giants don’t get Jacobs going the Eagles will win the game!
Good points as well Michelle. I tell you what, if the Eagles lose they will tear this city down.
Eagles get the ball to start the third into the wind.
Donovan 9-18 for 68 yards. Eli 8-16 for 87 yards.
The win is a factor folks.
Demps with a gigantic return to the 47. 46 yd return. Nice job young fella.
1st and 10: Avant catches for 2.
2nd and 8: McNabb intercepted on the bat down by Fred Robbins. He returns to the 35.
1st and 10 Giants: Brandon Jacobs runs for 10.
1st and 10: Jacobs for 5.
2nd and 5: Ward drops the quick pass.
Samuel in for an iv.
3rd and 5: Quentin Mikel out. Sean Considine defenses Boss. 35 yard field goal attempt coming up.
Carney good.
New York Giants 11, Philadelphia Eagles 10.
Tynes kicks off to Demps up to the 25.
Timeout 12:33 in the third.
1st and 10: Celek drops another pass.
2nd and 10: Run for Buck, but looks like holding.
2nd and 20: Quentin Mikell limps off. Giants get pressure and McNabb tosses off too early.
3rd and 20: YESSSSSS! McNabb eludes the rush. Donovan passes to Curtis for the 3rd down conversion. Play of the game so far.
1st and 10 after the 21 yard completion: Kevin Curtis drops a bomb but a flag.
SHIT! Illegal hands to the face. Nice throw to Curtis but is dropped.
1st and 10: McNabb to Buckhalter for 3.
2nd and 7: McNabb throws 15 yards to Curtis.
1st and 10: Buckhalter stopped for 0.
2nd and 10: Wind takes a screen pass awry.
Giant down. Timeout.
3rd and 10: Another third down conversion. Eagles 5-8. Buckhalter down to the 20.
Big conversion. Gotta score a TD here. Damn the field goal.

1st and 10: Westbrook for 4.
Justin Tuck aggravated knee.

1st and 10: Aikman and Buck sound desperate. Jacobs for 3.
2nd and 7: Jacobs for 2 on the left.
3rd and 5: Bring them Jimmy, bring them! Damn! Manning beats the blitz and completes to Hickson for 34 down to the Eagle 30. That was a really good pass.
Time out.
1st and 10: Never get tired of the Randall clip. Manning throws high to Hickson. Sheldon Brown with the big hit.
2nd and 10: Eagles need a stop. Jacobs run Chris Gocong with the tackle.
3 and 9: Eagles blitz. Trent Cole breaks up pass in coverage.

3rd and 5: Big play here. Curtis reception for 8. McNabb makes a big play.
1st and 10: Philly 6 for 10 on conversions.
Pass interference Giants. Yes the left hand was there.
The refs pick up the flag???
Bullshit.
Time out Philadelphia.
2nd and 10: The Eagles need to continue to move the chains. L.J. Smith with the reception. Antonio Pierce face mask. 21 total yards. 6 on the completion.
1st and 10: Touchdown needed. Kevin Curtis reception from McNabb down to the 15 for 15.
1st and 10; Brett Celek catch for five from McNabb.
No sacks of Eagles from the Giants the entire year.
2nd and 4: Westbrook for three.
3rd and 1: Play of the game. Westbrook down to the 1!!!!!! Eagles are 3rd down monsters. Anyone questioning my top five pick now?
End of the third: Eagles 13, Giants 11.
Eagles have to punch this in. It could be a wrap if they do.
1st and goal Philadelphia with the wind: They kept the ball 10 minutes of the third with the wind in their face.
MCNABB TOUCHDOWN TO CELEK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Eagles 20, Giants 11.
Ya’ll like my reverse psychology huh? Glasses make me smart
Akers kicks to Bradshaw up to the 15.
1st and 10 Giants: Brandon Jacobs for 10.
1st and 10: Jacobs for 5.
2nd and 5: Jacobs for 2.
3rd and 3: Crazy call on third down but Ward is close. Spot coming. Inches away.
Tom Coughlin challenges the spot. I thought he had it. He might have blown a timeout. Kinda stupid in this situation.
Damn I wish I was there!
4th and inches: Look for the sneak.
Manning sneaks….HHHHHHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!! He did not get it!!!
Stop of the year as far as the Eagles are concerned.
1st and 10 Eagles: Westbrook for 3.
2nd and 7: Curtis catch from McNabb for 2.
3rd and 5: Play of the game. McNabb swings it out to Westbrook, but Webster makes great tackle for the stop.
Eagles punt.

2nd and 2: Ward gets the first down. Why is the clock stopped?
1st and 10: Manning to Toomer for 5.
2nd and 5: Jacobs for 2
3rd and 3: Wildcat! Parker makes big ass stop.
4th and 2: Jacobs did not get it. Dumb move by Coughlin. Put the ball in the air.
Eagles ball!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Vinnie Goodwill, yungvito on TSF, sends me a text saying Jimmy Johnson is the MVP of this game. I concur. McNabb has managed the game well and moved the chains when the Eagles needed to. A lot to talk about in NY this week.
1st and 10 Eagles: Buckhalter loses a yard.

January 11th, 2009 at 6:32 pmJust for the record:
The Eagles (all things being equal, especially turnovers) cannot lose if they are balanced on offense. I’ve been saying that since the Bengals game. I believe its true for this team in a way that’s never been true.
I have this feeling that the Eagles TRUE HOLY TRINITY, when it’s all said and done will be Asante Samuel, Lito Sheppard and Sheldon Brown. The Lock Down is in effect. If you get behind this team, you can forget it.

January 11th, 2009 at 6:33 pmLike I told folks Eli without Plax is trash.
But don’t cry for the golden boy, they will make sure they get him a top flight WR. Cause you know he is a golden boy.
I wouldn’t doubt the giants get Boldin next year for a Plax throwback jersey.

January 11th, 2009 at 6:56 pmcan’t

michelle Says:
January 11th, 2009 at 6:57 pmTemple3,
You are right. The Eagles have to step on the Giants early and often if they are going to win. After all they are the Super Bowl champs.
-
michelle Says:
January 11th, 2009 at 7:00 pmThe Eagles D is doing their job. The offense better help out soon or this could get ugly. Only having 11 yards total offense at this stage of the game should have the Eagles coaching staff very concerned.
-
Burundi Says:
January 11th, 2009 at 7:00 pmNot sure why but it seems that Eli will keep the Eagles in this game, despite that nice throw to Boss.

Mizzo Says:
January 11th, 2009 at 7:02 pmMy bad on the moderation delay Burundi. You’re good now.
-
HarveyDent Says:
January 11th, 2009 at 7:03 pmThe Eagles’ O may need to flip the script and use the pass to set up the run this game.
I wrote last night that Westy’s injuries may finally catch up to him this game so if the Eagles are going to play him then play him in space and make Buck the primary runner.
-
Burundi Says:
January 11th, 2009 at 7:03 pmThe Eagles stuffing the run and putting the G-men in 3rd and long situations is the recipe for Eli’s less-than-stellar decision making. You just kow he’s gonna serve up a few gifts, regardless of which way the wind is blowing.

michelle Says:
January 11th, 2009 at 7:04 pmPlaxico would have caught that one to.

January 11th, 2009 at 7:06 pmMissed FGA. Nice field position. Here’s your chance. Maybe Westbrook and Buckhalter in backfield at same time to set up some deep play action looks to DeSean Jackson. Gotta mix it up.

michelle Says:
January 11th, 2009 at 7:08 pmThe Eagles have used 8 of their 9 lives. They better get it together quick.

HarveyDent Says:
January 11th, 2009 at 7:38 pmHey, O, did Aikman ever run? McNabb doesn’t run as much as he used to because of little injury called ACL. The guy’s not a kid anymore but he’s showing again that he’s a damn good OB.

-
origin Says:
January 11th, 2009 at 7:39 pmTrue Harvey.
They do that to every blk QB. Like they don’t get old or something.
Till the day Mcnair retired folks were complaining that he didn’t run.
-
michelle Says:
January 11th, 2009 at 7:40 pmBurundi,
LOL!
-
michelle Says:
January 11th, 2009 at 7:41 pm10-8 Philly at the half.
Go get you popcorn everyone. See after halftime!
-
HarveyDent Says:
January 11th, 2009 at 7:43 pmThoughts on the second half is that the Eagles’ D just needs to keep lighting up the G’s offense. For the Eagles’ O, they need to spread it out and let the WR corps be a factor. Once and if that happens, lanes will open up for the running game.
Eli’s only going to hurt the Giants if he has to toss the ball up. The blitzes are going to keep coming and Eli will start to chuck and duck.
-
Burundi Says:
January 11th, 2009 at 7:45 pmMichelle,
Popcorn—and beer!
-
michelle Says:
January 11th, 2009 at 7:47 pmMizzo,
The Eagles can’t turn over the ball in the second half.
-
michelle Says:
January 11th, 2009 at 7:48 pmBurundi,
No beer for me I’m watching my weight.
-
Burundi Says:
January 11th, 2009 at 7:50 pmMizzo,
The Eagles need to continue stuffing the run and force Eli to beat them with his arm. I just heard the studio crew say that the Eagles’ll have the wind in the fourth, which I believe will be huge because the Eagles have the better pure passer, no question.
-
HarveyDent Says:
January 11th, 2009 at 7:50 pmMichelle, Jacobs is already going but everyone else other than Boss on that offense is not. Limit his long runs and nurse this lead and it’s on to AZ for the Eagles.
I’m still nervous as hell though.
-
HarveyDent Says:
January 11th, 2009 at 7:52 pmBurundi, did you just blaspheme? You said McNabb was a better pure passer than a white guy? Now you know you don’t talk about dem white folks like that…LOL!!

michelle Says:
January 11th, 2009 at 7:58 pmHarveyDent,
He better!
-
Mizzo Says:
January 11th, 2009 at 7:59 pmThat wasn’t McNabb’s fault as far as the pass. Credit the Giants.
-
Burundi Says:
January 11th, 2009 at 7:59 pmThe Eagles’ D-Backs need to start playing Eli as well as their assignments because of his shaky accuracy, as that pass could have been picked with it thrown behind the TE. Like I said, earlier, where the @#$% is ol’ Inevitable Ed Reed when you need him. Hopefully, Asante comes back. Yes!
-
origin Says:
January 11th, 2009 at 7:59 pmI still don’t put that last INT on Mcnabb. If the OL guy didn’t try to be randy moss and tip it in the air it would have never been intercepted.
-
HarveyDent Says:
January 11th, 2009 at 8:01 pmI know, Miz, but the Eagles can take these guys passing the ball. Forget running into the teeth of that D as the centerpiece of that O. Get the wideouts involved and the Giants won’t know what hit them.

We saw that mess with Moss. The media love to hype up that a player is a cancer and how you can’t win with them.
So why hasn’t the bengals won. Is it because of Chad or because Palmer is an overated QB?

Mizzo Says:
January 11th, 2009 at 8:17 pmMiranda football is a powerful sport. You need powerful personalities, but they have to be tempered with wisdom.

michelle Says:
January 11th, 2009 at 8:51 pmHarveyDent,
I hear ya!
-
HarveyDent Says:
January 11th, 2009 at 8:52 pmThis is from Tim Layden on CNNSI:
Quarterback play: No similarity at all. Put aside Reid’s benching of McNabb in Baltimore — McNabb this week called his play since that day “coincidental,” which seems like a stretch — and you’re talking about one of the best quarterbacks of his generation. McNabb has righted himself and played well down the stretch (10 TD passes and just two interceptions in six games), but it would have been a surprise if he hadn’t.
Eli Manning is now getting endless praise (and deservedly so), but at midseason a year ago — just his third as a full-time starter — he was getting ripped as a potential bust. From a home loss to Dallas on Nov. 11 to a win at Buffalo two days before Christmas, Manning threw six touchdown passes and 10 interceptions in seven games. He was terrific against New England in the regular season finale, and had a 123.2 passer rating in the postseason, but all of that was a very pleasant surprise. No comparison to what is expected of McNabb.
********************************************The reason I’m posting it is because he called McNabb one of the best OB’s of his generation. Heady praise.

January 12th, 2009 at 12:13 amDid anyone happen to notice that over the weekend, the teams who scored first LOST all the games?
-
michelle Says:
January 12th, 2009 at 12:14 amGrandNubian,
Hello, no I didn’t notice that.
-
Miranda Says:
January 12th, 2009 at 12:23 amI didn’t notice that either…..yep, this game is over. Somebody’s not gonna make it in that Ravens-Steelers matchup.
-
origin Says:
January 12th, 2009 at 1:00 amGN that can’t be. Didn’t the eagles score first???
-
origin Says:
January 12th, 2009 at 1:05 amDang I didn’t want the steelers in there. They are the only team left that I believe can beat the eagles.
Anyway here is a stat. Since the NFL merger there have been atleast 2 teams who have won multiple superbowls each decade.
The Pats won 3 this decade. No team has won more then one.
However the steelers and Ravens are the only teams left in the playoffs who have won a superbowl this decade. -
GrandNubian Says:
January 12th, 2009 at 1:47 amNope, the Giants got a FG on their 1st drive (I think). And the McNabb sneak on the 1 yd line gave the Eagles their 1st lead (7-3).
-
origin Says:
January 12th, 2009 at 1:52 amYeap you are right man.
-
Eric Daniels Says:
January 12th, 2009 at 3:15 amI picked the Giants upset and the Steelers win but was wrong on Saturday’s games. Mc Nabb played very well and the Eagles defense played like studs and losing Plaxico Burress hurt Eli. I told my Doctor who’s Giants fan back in Novemeber that the Back-to Back ended in a strip club because a franchise WR will win championships even if they weren’t having a good season. He didn’t believe me and thought they were better off without Burress.
Well the NFL playoffs shows your heart not the 13th week of the season.

GrandNubian Says:
January 12th, 2009 at 11:54 amYeah, I was 3 for 4 over the weekend myself(freekin’ Panthers :-)).
