Patrick:

How interesting. Shark Island. The site of the Germans early concentration camps -- reserved for Africans in Namibia. This was all a whole generation before the round up of European Jewry. Shussshhhh!!!

Boy, them folks down in Tampa sure let that sub-conscious run wild. Ain't no friends of mine. Josh Freeman is really in the belly of the beast. Even his advocates have concentration camps (and mini-camp) on the brain.

A positive retort (from a Tampa Tribune columnist) against the over-the-top negativity this past weekend toward Tampa's new African-American franchise QB, Josh Freeman:

http://www2.tbo.com/content/2009/apr/27/sp-enough-talk-let-the-kid-play/sports-bucs/

...."I have no idea if Josh Freeman will be any good. I don't know if he'll be Tom Brady or Marcia Brady.

But could he be allowed to throw one NFL football at one NFL minicamp before we banish him to Shark Island?

It's fine to take a swipe or two at Bucs coach Raheem Morris and GM Mark Dominik for taking a chance. But don't make it personal, especially when it comes to the 21-year-old Freeman...."

Enough talk: Let the kid play

Nobody really talks much about Jacksonville's David Garrard, but he and the Jacksonville Jaguars are taking a renewed approach to the upcoming season and Garrard is apparently leading by example and has lost at least twenty pounds during the offseason.

http://www.jacksonville.com/sports/football/jaguars/2009-04-09/story/heres_the_skinny_on_garrard_leaner_faster

....>>Having spent most of his career weighing approximately 250, Garrard has been able to rank third in rushing among quarterbacks since 2006, and he finished second last season with a career-high 322 yards.

Ideally, the Jaguars would like to limit the frequency of the times Garrard runs. But the offense employs lots of play-action passes and bootlegs, so increased mobility would help Garrard to set his feet faster and find open receivers.

In addition, improved mobility might have helped Garrard to sidestep some of the 42 sacks suffered last season, (double his previous high for sacks, set in 2007)....>>

..."Pat White needs to make sure he knows the ENTIRE playbook. Tuna has already demonstrated he'll give a QB with a similar background a chance to run the offense (Ray Lucas). Lucas could do a lot of things, but he was not as talented as Pat White...."

I agree. I believe Patrick White will be an impact player in a limited, but predominate role in his rookie year, similar to Mike Vick in Atlanta during his first year when Chris Chandler was still QB. I believe White will be ready to take his game to a new level in much the same way Vick did in 2002 when he went to a Pro Bowl and lead the Falcons to the playoffs in 2002.

Parcells is 'old school' (like Dan Reeves), but he has a progressive, forward-thinking streak in him. As you had mentioned Ray Lucas 10 years ago, Quincy Carter with Dallas five years ago...and ultimately Pat White.

I can tell you right now that I'd rather have Pat White than Chad Henne under center. Henne is bigger and played a "classic" dropback position at Michigan, but his lack of mobility cost UM dearly in games against teams like USC and Ohio State.

I think Henne was a major reason why Michigan underperformed over the last few years. He's a system quarterback that needs flawless protection to be effective. He doesn't have a super quick release, but he is accurate. Still, with the arsenal of receivers and backs he had at his disposal, the offense simply disappeared in too many games.

Temple3:

Actually, the GM Jeff Ireland says there will likely be a competition between Chad Henne (excuse me, not Pennington) and Patrick White in 2010.

Pennington will be 34 in 2010, and I don't know his contract situation right now, but Chad Henne had been previously dubbed as the 'quarterback of the future', but the Miami GM refused to pigeon-hole White's role as just a gimmick player or try to characterize him as a 'Slash, Part Deux'.

...... >>>>So the next question is more intriguing: How does Ireland envision the quarterback position with Henne and now White?

"They're going to be competing for the position,'' Ireland said....>>>>

http://www.sun-sentinel.com/sports/football/pro/dolphins/sfl-hyde-dolphins-nfl-draft-042909,0,293111.column

White is more likely to see the field in 2009 moreso than Henne and Patrick White will work with the first-team offense as the 'leader' of the wildcat offense in 2009. Pennington will still be the starter for 2009, but with Pennington he has had a history of shoulder problems and last year he laid an egg in the playoffs. So as the season progresses, if White excels in his wildcat role and if the Dolphins' defense proves to be more stingy, I believe Pat White's role will incrementally increase and thus putting him in a more advantageous position as being a leading candidate to start in 2010 possibly if Pennington leaves Miami.

On a lighter note, I'm wondering if the Lakers will make the Nuggets look as bad as Denver has made New Orleans.

The Nuggets have real trouble with the Lakers. LA has bigger, bulkier, more talented size than Denver. The Nuggets are playing a short-handed team that is out of gas. Peja has been a buster for years. There are no credible offensive options on this team after CP3 and David West.

I'd like to see Denver do some things against a squad with depth and an attitude.

Over the past few weeks, I've written about 8 or 9 pieces about the events in Somalia. The link to the first few sections is here:
http://temple3.wordpress.com/the-piracy-pages-somalia-in-context/

Patrick:
1. The US has had full knowledge of this situation for more than two decades and has not lifted a finger (with respect to the dumping and illegal fishing).

2. The US just created a new Strategic Command (AFRICOM - http://temple3.wordpress.com/2009/04/16/the-nature-of-this-beast/) that is really aimed at controlling energy on the African continent. The US gets more oil from Africa than from Saudi Arabia and that trend is going to continue. The US is engaged in an open competition with China and India for resources.

3. Oil and food (the top 2 critical resources Africa is providing to China) is being shipped along the Indian Ocean and Somalian "pirates" provide a perfect justification for an increased US military presence in the region. Don't be surprised if a Chinese ship is accidentally sunk in a few months -- the same way their embassy in Europe was "accidentally bombed" by smart missiles that somehow lost "intelligence" upon being deployed.

4. Not one single Italian or other European firm or individual has been hauled into a US court or international court (by the US) for committing crimes in the waters off Somalia. Meanwhile, Europeans have hauled off over $300M in fish and saved themselves billions in dumping waste. Two Italian journalists were murdered investigating this story because it implicated the Italian Army and the Mafia -- among others.

5. The Somalis used to have a middle man in the Gulf of Aden that steered them to which ships could be safely taken. This incident was the first involving a US ship and crew. The information from the middle man, historically, steered clear of American ships. When the full story is told, you will be able to see that this entire scenario is a contrivance.

6. Some Somalis are making a boat load of loot in this deal. However, many of them were able to do so because they have the power to impose force -- because they own large stocks of Western guns -- supplied by the world's number 1 arms dealer -- the United States of America and her private operatives.

7. Somalia is one of five nations in the Horn of Africa that are critical geopolitically -- for Africa and for everyone else. The area is so important that when the British still dominated the seas, they had more aircraft in the Gulf of Aden than anywhere else on the planet outside of the UK itself.

"Conspiracy" doesn't begin to frame what is going on in Somalia and the rest of Africa.

The US just created a new Strategic Command (AFRICOM – http://temple3.wordpress.com/2009/04/16/the-nature-of-this-beast/) that is really aimed at controlling energy on the African continent. The US gets more oil from Africa than from Saudi Arabia and that trend is going to continue. The US is engaged in an open competition with China and India for resources.

3. Oil and food (the top 2 critical resources Africa is providing to China) is being shipped along the Indian Ocean and Somalian “pirates” provide a perfect justification for an increased US military presence in the region. Don’t be surprised if a Chinese ship is accidentally sunk in a few months — the same way their embassy in Europe was “accidentally bombed” by smart missiles that somehow lost “intelligence” upon being deployed.

4. Not one single Italian or other European firm or individual has been hauled into a US court or international court (by the US) for committing crimes in the waters off Somalia. Meanwhile, Europeans have hauled off over $300M in fish and saved themselves billions in dumping waste. Two Italian journalists were murdered investigating this story because it implicated the Italian Army and the Mafia — among others.

However, many of them were able to do so because they have the power to impose force — because they own large stocks of Western guns — supplied by the world’s number 1 arms dealer — the United States of America and her private operatives.

7. Somalia is one of five nations in the Horn of Africa that are critical geopolitically — for Africa and for everyone else. The area is so important that when the British still dominated the seas, they had more aircraft in the Gulf of Aden than anywhere else on the planet outside of the UK itself.

“Conspiracy” doesn’t begin to frame what is going on in Somalia and the rest of Africa.

New Orleans has no heart left. They are overmatched in this series. Wonder if they'll show any pride in the next game.

Thanks for the links about Pat White. I was wondering if they would give him a chance. More than any other QB in the draft, he helped himself with his workouts. And I say that, because before almost every team projected him as an "athlete". Also, his height was mentioned, even though he's taller than Drew Brees. He insisted that he be allowed to work out as a QB. Scouts were surprised that he could make the throws that he did in the workouts because he played in the spread offense at West Virginia. I'm happy that they're actually going to give him a chance. I don't think he could beat out a healthy Chad Pennington this year, but next year, who knows.....
