Friday Fire: What’s Your Favorite Beer?

For real, for real? I was about to get all serious for today’s question but the Jeffersons and Good Times got the better of me. Both of those shows have been mad therapeutic lately so I gotta tip my hat to the past.

Anyway, since Temple3 was talking about buying the entire TSF crew nice and frothy Guinness pints, I gotta ask the fellas (and the sistas in case your Chardonnay is a little to dainty) what’s your favorite beer? How did you come about that decision? If not beer then whatever else soothes the mood when it’s time to chill after a meal or when smoke is coming oh so blessed aroma propa like off the grill.

I’m down with the green bottles brothas.

I’ll have a couple of more posts after I get back into town after taking care of some business. Those of you hittin’ up the Happy Hour spot trying to get a whiff of that sensual almost summertime perfume while tossing down a couple work week quenching brews, please don’t drink and drive. It ain’t cool to be dead.

Be peace and enjoy your Friday.

I am SXE (Straight-Edge) so the answer to this question is….. Mug Root Beer.

  2. Mizzo says:

Elaborate please. Why so? I’m out. Be back later.

  3. TC says:

I was born in Newcastle England and Newcastle Brown gotsta be my favourite (as they’d write there). Guinness would be a close second though if Temple’s buyin’ :)

  4. origin says:

I’m with you TC………..that Guinness will grow hair on your chest.

  5. Okori says:

Why so for which one? The straight-edge thing or the Mug Root Beer thing?

Since i have no choice but to assume that you mean both here we go.

I became straight-edge because my grandfather was an alcoholic, as were several nieces and nephews. not wanting that for my own life I decided to become SXE. Best decision i have ever made. people don’t push alcohol on me because they know i don’t drink. same with smoking. the third tenet, no promiscuity, that’s just a guideline. :)

as far as Mug root beer…… it’s always cold. it tastes just right. and…… it’s friggin cheap.

  6. TC says:

Okori……thou doth protest too much on the promiscuity tip ;) j/k. If it works for you, more power to you man!

  7. Temple3 says:

    TC –

I’m only buying if I lose that debate about LeBron James being the world’s greatest athlete. So far, I’m doing grrrrreat.

I’ll try that NewCastle stuff. I’ve seen it, but never tried it.

Murphy’s is very good — arguably better than Guinness.

Murphy’s Irish Stout is a dry stout brewed in County Cork according to the original recipe by Murphy’s Brewery since 1856.[1]

In comparison to its more bitter and heavier chief competitors, Guinness and Beamish, Murphy’s is a lighter and sweeter dry stout.[2][3] Its flavour is evocative of caramel and malt,[4] and is described as “a distant relative of chocolate milk”.[2] The resemblance to milk extends beyond flavor to texture; Murphy’s is free from any hint of carbonation,[2] and is delivered “black as strong cappuccino” with an inch of foam – “the head” – on top.[5] The head, in particular, is lauded for its remarkably thick and creamy nature and its “spoonable” density.[6]

After years as a mostly local beer, the acquisition of the brewery by Heineken – with a consequent expansion in distribution – exposed Murphy’s to the international drinking community. As the fastest growing stout in the world,[7] Murphy’s is available in 70 countries worldwide.[8] Critical reception of the beverage outside its native land has been generally positive. As an example, the ‘”Beer Bites” column of The Daily Orange granted it “three and a half out of four mugs”[2]. Commentators have noted the more intense, darker and heartier flavoured nature of Murphy’s as a significant distinction over American beers.[9]

Guinness has been more readily available, but the contest is on.

I like the dark stouts — found out about those during summers in Jamaica. Nice stuff.

If it’s not a stout, I’m rolling with Sierra Nevada — in all the different assortments.

Heineken, from a flavor/taste standpoint, is just unacceptable. Heineken is just what’s been sold in the strip clubs and dance halls for ever — but it’s not a solution for a true, blue thirst.

Mizzo — you come to New York and we’ll do it up.

  8. Dredded One says:

Brooklyn Ale. Both the the porter and the ale are exceptional.

  9. Temple3 says:

    Amen, Dredded One.

And brewed by a brother — Garrett Oliver.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brooklyn_Brewery

    Excellent choice.

  10. Revuhlution says:

Heineken if the good stuff isn’t available.

Brown Ale all the way…Newcastle is always good, as is a new one I had from Montana called Moose Droole. Appetizing, eh?

    Guinness….looks good, but no thanks.

  11. Okori says:

and Mizz…. I’ll make the food while you guys have the drinks. deal?

  12. kos says:

No alcohol for me. Amazingly, a lot of the women that I’ve dated, have had a problem with me NOT drinking. lol They felt guilty since they did drink.

  13. michelle says:

    Corona with lime

  14. Mizzo says:

Kos you like ‘em fast huh. I see you ;)

Okori, that’s whassup. You better get started now because a brotha can eat!

I also like Blue Moon, Black and Tan, Yuengling, Moosehead.

Heineken always tasted best after hoops back in the day, so I stuck with it.

  15. Hal says:

Okay, you got me. I’m surprised to find so many stout fans here, makes me feel even more at home. Guinness on tap, pints pulled by a bartender who knows the right way, is hard to beat. The “draft” cans and bottles, with the little gizmo inside, are better poured than the straight bottles and cans, but none touch a draft pint well pulled. (Takes a long time, with pauses to let things calm down, to pull a pint well. Too slow for most busy bars.)

Murphy’s is good, but I like Beamish’s Stout the best of what’s in cans. My favorite stout of all time was ABC Stout, from Malaysia (Archipelago Brewing Co.). It was easy to find in San Francisco in the ’80s, but disappeared. I don’t know if it’s not brewed anymore, or just not imported, but for bottled stout (BIG bottles) it was the best.

The best West Coast brewery, I’d say, is Anderson Valley. All their beers are exceptional, especially Boont Amber, which is as rich and tasty as any beer I’ve had. On tap it’s even better. Easily beats Sierra Nevada and the other West Coast beers. I don’t know how widely it’s distributed, but check it out if you’re in the neighborhood. (“Boont” by the way is short for Boontling – a secret language developed by the inghabitants of Booneville, CA, so they could keep their business private from outsiders. You can learn about it on the Anderson Valley website.)

  16. Okori says:

Mizz I am sure that you can. how does cheese enchiladas, grilled chicken with thyme, mint, and basil, and salad sound?

I had to learn how to cook in order to survive.

  17. Christine says:

    Killians Red :)

  18. Mizzo says:

Uh…thank you “Christine.” Time machine me. I see you more as an Eva or even better a Bon Qui Qui Can I get a #3? ;)

  19. awb says:

I’m down with that Newcastle. I try the artisan stuff, the expensive stuff and it’s good. Really good-but I almost come back to the “brown dog”

  20. awb says:

I mean: I “always come back”

  21. TC says:

Thanks for the tip on Brooklyn Brewery. Gonna hafta check that out. Also love Hefeweizen, and I like Dos Equis or Corona with lime as a nice default beer.

  22. MODI says:

I don’t drink beer often, but when I do –

    I drink Des Equis.

No, seriously, I might be the only guy who prefers American-made beer. Guiness goes down like lead, and I like some room for my meal. I find most Euro imports to be too bitter. If I go import, it is going to be Corona.

Bud, Miller, Coors are pretty interchangeable to me. I know, most people think they are watered-down piss water, but they work for me.

  23. AXG says:

I’m not drinking anything but H2O, however I love this new commercial…it’s SUPER OFFICIAL!

  24. Temple3 says:

    MODI —

Try Murphy’s — when you’re not eating. The stouts are definitely heavier, but they also allow you to eat less. They’re not fattening like many other beers, either.

I think you can drink domestic stuff that’s very, very good and not bitter. Bud and Miller and Coors are absolutely watered down piss. No question on that. Try Dredded One’s advice on Brooklyn Lager. There was an explosion of micro-breweries over the past 15-120 years and there are tons of good local brews from all over.

Magic Hat makes a GREAT beer. DogFishHead makes a GREAT beer. You could drink those all night and be good to go. DFH, in particular, has some very nice flavors that don’t have the bitterness you’re trying to avoid. Same for Anchor Steam.

  25. Mizzo says:

Love Dog Fish. How could I forget. Made in Delaware. The owners were a Southern Delaware success story in the late 90′s. Took a class at the Small Business Association and they were the previous year’s model. Inspiring how they have grown since then.

  26. vleeflo says:

From the midwest Great Lakes Brewing company:

    1. Christmas Ale
    2. Conways Irish Ale

Both seasonal. Love em’ both when I can get them. During the Christmas holiday season, Christmas ale doesn’t stay on the shelves.

  27. Matthew Fudge says:

Heineken or El Presidente. Bud Ice if my wallet’s a little light.

  28. Matthew Fudge says:

Heineken & Hennessy if I’ve had a particularly rough work day/week.

  29. Don says:

Hal, ABC Stout is available in Singapore and Myanmar in cans.

  30. Nice article, Just forwarded this on to a coworker who read up on this and she took me to eat after I showed her this site. So, Thanks!!
