Friday Fire: What Is A Super Star?

Just because you play one on TV doesn’t mean shit does it?

What is your definition of a superstar? I tend to go with a player who gets his numbers no matter what the circumstances. Whether down 50 or kissing the trophy…they get theirs and they win.

Lights on or lights out.

I’ll start it off and name who I think is a super star in the NBA.

Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Tim Duncan, Chauncey Billups, Carmelo Anthony, Kevin Garnett, Chris Paul, Derrick Rose, Paul Pierce, Dwight Howard, Brandon Roy…

Is Amare a superstar? Dirk? Nash?

Tracy McGrady is not a superstar. He and Yao aren’t the best players on the Rockets, Ron Ron is.

Yeah he’s a superstar. Put him on Boston this year and they win the title.

Rose and Roy are there because they just have it.

See now I’m grasping for names. Finish the list. Delete. Add. Discuss.

If you are playing in the NBA, you got there with hard work. Yeah, some cats are talented, but even bench players could light up anyone not in the league on a consistent basis. My point is, with all this Kobe/LeBron talk, we are seeing Carmelo Anthony and Dwight Howard take exception really without a lot of fanfare and shove it down the NBA marketing machine throats.

We all knew Melo was good. We all figured he’d be that George Gervin type scorer but never saw him quite in the championship caliber realm reserved for the true superstar.

Scratch that.
