Serena Williams Defeats Elena Dementieva in What Is Being Hailed As the Best Women’s Match Ever
Classic. Pam Shriver and Darren Cahill are calling this match one of the best they’ve ever seen. Serena Williams is going for her 11th Grand Slam title and Elena Dementieva gave her everything she had and more before ultimately succumbing 6-7 (4), 7-5, 8-6 . I’m not a huge tennis fan, but this was really a great match to watch. Both women played Rasheed Wallace hard and Serena fought off a match point in the second set at 5-4 to spur the comeback. Dementieva made some great returns but Serena
subsequently pumped the fist seemingly every single time. There were challenges that just didn’t go Dementieva’s way in the second set that could have swayed the match and despite Serena missing on her forehand a couple of times late, she broke Dementieva to win at 8-6 in the third most likely because of her dominating serve and will to win. This is Serena’s second straight Wimbledon Final. Dementieva, 27, has yet to win a Grand Slam (She was an Olympic champion for Russia in Beijing) but seems talented enough to one day do so. Venus plays at 12 against Dinara Safina and if she wins, another all Williams Championship Final is in store.
I wish I had seen this. I knew this was going to be a good one. I expect Venus’ matchup with Dinara Safina (boy, that’s an African name I ever heard one) to be about as closely contested.
These four women are really excellent players. It’s great for the game.
I guess Venus is NOT havin’ it. She’s doing work.

Imposing your will on folks is a tennis trademark and the Williams sisters will bring out the shook in ya quick fast in a blurry.
Man I watched this match, and I couldn’t leave the house this morning…it was so official. I’m looking forward to the Williams Wimbleton Final.
I’m taking Venus. Serena is the more competitive of the two but Venus approaches Wimbledon like it’s her birthright. While everyone is saying Serena vs. Dementieva was a classic it’s going to supplanted Saturday morning by Serena vs. Venus with Venus just edging little sis.
I like Venus to win, I’m not sure if it’ll be as classic as Serena’s match yesterday but I expect a great match.
Venus winning title number six would put her three behind Martina Navratilova for all-time Wimbledon singles victories.
Called the wrong one because I thought Venus would bring it home. Step it up next year, sista. Congrats to Serena and all the Williamses.
