SAO PAULO (AP) — Officials say former world boxing champion Arturo Gatti has been found dead in a hotel room in northeastern Brazil.
A spokeswoman for the public safety department of Pernambuco state says the body of the former junior welterweight champ was discovered on Saturday morning in the posh seaside resort of Porto de Galinhas, where he arrived on Friday with his wife and one-year-old son.
She said it was unclear how the 37-year-old Canadian died.
“There were no bullet or stab wounds on his body, but police did find blood stains on the floor,” she said, adding that his wife and son were unhurt.
The spokeswoman, who did not provide further details, declined to be identified because she was not authorized to comment on the case.
Gatti is best remembered for his epic bouts against Ivan Robinson (2) and an epic trilogy against Micky Ward. Gatti’s straight ahead boxing style and the ability to endure tremendous punishment in the ring earned him the respect of his peers and fight fans worldwide.

I remember his bloody bouts where he would just keep moving forward to take some punishment and hand even more out. I watched a Gatti fight some years back when he broke his hand early. When Gatti told his trainer the trainer asked, “what do you want me to do?” Gatti replied, “nothing, I’m gonna keep fighting.” That sounded like some hollywood script material except this was real life. Gatti was a warrior!

I found out about this elsewhere. The fight I was watching added him to the 10 count bell honoring Arguello and Michael Jackson. Unbelievable past few weeks.

This is so sad. I loved Gatti. I loved to watch his fights until that mudering witch killed him! All i know is i just bought the robes from there 2nd fight I think Gatti and Ward. That`s a boxer hall of fame set of fights. I`m glad I bought them. I`m not rich but poor. I did`nt get them to make money I got them to put them in the boxers hall of fame one day! Google the robes you`ll see. It`s true Gatti did`nt sign a lot of autographs and it being these two, man that`s something special. I will miss him in the ring, and just alive. Now I can chreish these until maybe Ica have them in the boxing hall of fame???Gatti will be there so will war as well as their fight`s why not the robes from the fights!?
Thank you rest in peace my brother. Always will miss you “Thunder “Gatti!
