Michael Jordan Responds to LeBron James and 23: All Access with Ahmad – Wednesday, November 18, 2009

LeBron and the Cavs were blown out last night, so I didn’t get to do my thing with him post game. In this game, you want the marquee to win so you get your stuff but sometimes this just doesn’t happen. I  wanted to ask LBJ about Mike and some other things, but that will have to wait. Here’s a response from Mike himself:

Hall of Famer Michael Jordan joins via phone ‘All-Access with Ahmad’ to wish Ahmad Rashad a happy birthday and to discuss LeBron James’ recent suggestion of retiring the No. 23 jersey across the league.

“It was very nice, I totally understand that. But I’m a guy that says there is no one great player in the NBA. The NBA lasts a lot longer than one particular person so I understand what his point is. Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, Bill Russell all those guys should have their jerseys retired too. I understand his gesture, but I am in the same group as those guys so I wouldn’t want to see my jersey retired unless you retire those guys.  It is a compliment. I totally understand that.  I appreciate LeBron for doing that and it is very thoughtful.”

Great response by MJ, and I agree. If you retire #23, you have to retire Wilt, Russell, Oscar, Jerry, etc.

I am from the Cleveland area. I respect lebrons decision about changing his number. I also agree that if you retire Michael Jordan’s number the NBA should retire the numbers of other NBA greats (Chamberlan, Bird, Johnson, ect) I believe you have a great opinion about this. michael Jordan is dedinately one of the NBA’s greatest playersof all time.

  3. I think LeBron is an amazing player and is more than likely only a matter of time untill he is a champion. However the one thing that i see that seperates him from michael is that he is not yet the kind of player that makes those around him better.I loved Karl Malones game but he also did not make those around him better.I hope i am wrong on this because no one seems to work harder than lebron so maybe it is just a maturity thing.
