Friday Fire: Of Course He’s Comeback Player of the Year, But…Could a Case Be Made That Vince Young Is 2009 NFL MVP?

We’ve all thought of this possibility for a while, but after seeing something similar on Roy Johnson’s facebook page, (link to yahoo piece) I had to at least begin a discussion. What’s VY won a zillion out of zillion and one? He’s a winner because he just wins…to channel my inner Yogi Berra. He brought Tennessee back from the dead and though the Titans are still a long shot to make the playoffs, Vince Young’s return under center propelled this team to what should be labeled as very successful year no matter what happens. Peyton Manning conceivably is the NFL MVP (Donovan should be in the running as well with Brees, Rivers, Johnson and Favre) because the Colts are 14-0. He will win the award if the Colts go undefeated but if they don’t and the Titans win out and somehow sneak into the playoffs, can a case be made that 10 is the MVP?

Why not?

At that point, the Titans would have lost one game…to the Colts coincidentally…so he should garner at least modest consideration. Think of it this way…remember when Kurt Gibson stole the MLB MVP from Darryl Strawberry? Gibson was injured throughout the year and put his team on his back to get into the playoffs and subsequently win the World Series. Young’s  stats comparatively are just as modest as Gibson’s were that year (transcending the sports of course). His season is unique in that he’s won every game he’s started except one. Under that criteria, he’s definitely the MVP of his team…Chris Johnson notwithstanding.

The league MVP…Why can’t that be Vince Young?

Oh yeah, the Titans defeat the Chargers tonight 27-26 as Vince sings…”another victory, they can’t get with me…so pick a BC date, ’cause your history!”

    If that scenario plays out:
a- the Colts don’t go undefeated
b- the Titans somehow sneak into the playoffs

then I definitely think Vince should get some serious MVP consideration. I don’t know if he should win it (I need to consider the other contenders more carefully), but VY would be as worthy as anyone you want to name.

Happy Holidays!!! and yes VY should be considered….how could he not be? The Titans had buzzards circling over their heads and now may actually get to the playoffs!

  3. Temple3 says:

If VY led a 99-yard drive and threw for 380 yards to beat the Colts, he’d be front and center in the conversation. Unfortunately for him, that gem was against the Cardinals and his personal byatch, Matt Leinart.

  4. Temple3 says:

At 28-10, its a moot point.

  5. Mizzo says:

Yes it was against the Cardinals. Seems like history wants that match up just as it is huh?

The Titans had to win this game for any of this to play out obviously. It shows you where the Chargers are right now. The AFC is now on the clock. The Chargers could be Super.

  6. Temple3 says:

Vince will have to get his hardware from somewhere else.

The 2009 NFL Comeback Player of the Year is……….

Tom Brady, QB, New England Patriots.

  7. Origin says:

Was there any doubt that it was Brady or Brett???

So that means that Brett is the MVP.

  8. Mizzo says:

I so wanna cuss right now…
