Lane Kiffin Leaves Tennessee for University of Southern California

Save a moment for Haiti please. They need our help. Donate if you can here. (the number is 501501 not 510510). A quake of this magnitude hasn’t hit the Caribbean in two hundred years.

I respect Lane Kiffin’s gangsta. There’s not a coach in the world that would have turned down such a high profile cushy job in his position. He was at Tennessee for fourteen months. The head coaching position at USC is one of the top positions in sports and remember Kiffin was the recruiting/offensive coordinator/receivers coach at USC in 2005-2006. The classes ranked number one in the nation.

I gotta ask. There are no Black football coaches in America who are more qualified than Lane? That’s a joke. USC could have made a great statement here but failed to do so and might have landed themselves a heap of problems.

Kiffin gave it to Tennessee with no grease.

Maybe Al Davis was right. Like I mentioned above, I respect Lane for landing his dream job, but the Dad in me is pissed. I have a son that’s about to go through the recruiting process and man is something like this discouraging.

Can we compare this to what people do outside of sports all the time when people change positions to fit their lifestyle?

There are reports out of Tennessee Former Tennessee recruiting coordinator Ed Orgeron is telling mid term commits to not go to class so they can get out of their commitment and head west to USC. One prized recruit could be staying put in the SEC.

Kippy Brown was named interim head coach. He brings a wealth of experience. We’ll see if he is given serious consideration or not to take over permanently. He is from Sweetwater, TN, just arrived into Knoxville in mid December of ’09 and was the quarterback at Memphis State from ’75-’77.

Lane’s Dad, Monte will also join the staff.

There are reports around the Internet that Norm Chow will join Kiffin as offensive coordinator but as of 9:00 am EST, no deal has been signed. After Chow left for the Titans, Kiffin was promoted to offensive coordinator for the Trojans.

Pete Carroll wanted Chow in Seattle to no avail.

Did impending sanctions affect job search?

Kiffin’s stops:

1997-1998 Fresno State Positions coach
1999 Colorado State offensive line coach
2000 Jacksonville Jags assistant
2001-2006 USC wide receiver/offensive coordinator
2007-2008
Oakland Raiders Head Coach (5-15)
2009 University of Tennessee Head Coach (7-6, 0-1 in Bowls)
2010-present USC Head Coach

I’m not as outraged about this as some folks. Yeah, I like UT (sorta) and they are getting the short end of the stick, but they should of it as karma for trying to act like Tee Martin didn’t win a national championship.

The SC job isn’t available often and if Kiffin stayed at UT and won, he’d be like Roy Williams (at KU) waiting on that UNC gig. It’s better this way. UT with a black coach. Lawd have mercy!!!!!

You know their plantation is in bad shape. LOL.

    You know it!

He had to go. I would have. I just feel for the kids who because of geography are locked to their decision.

USC alumna here (graduated in the mid-1980s, when the program was mediocre). I’m still processing “Lance” Kiffin coming to USC, and I feel like I want to check out Al Davis’ overhead projector press conference when he fired young Kiffin in 2008.

I am trying to keep an open mind. People were stupefied when Pete Carroll was hired.

Lane Kiffin reminds me so much of George W Bush, a rich boy who rode off his dad’s coattails and influence to get anything he desired. This is a prime example of the white “C” student getting a job he does not deserve while the Black “A” student gets to work behind the scenes with nothing to show for their efforts.
