The Starting Five 2010 NFL Divisional Round Recap: Remember, Brad Childress Is An Eagle

Three blowouts and one shocker. It just never works out the way it’s supposed to huh? Look for some mad heat to be applied in San Diego this off season. A text from Temple3: “Ironically, Romo appears to have vindicated McNabb.” My response: “So has Rivers and Palmer.” Yeah, it’s all Philly here all the time. Anyway, here’s some short commentary on what went down yesterday, highlighted by Keith Brooking’s Minnesota Nice tears. Dig the looks on the player’s faces on the sideline. I’m sorry Cowboys fans, but ya gave it to me last week despite a brotha being really humble after two straight blowouts. I even offered you congratulations which was kinda crazy. Now ya sitting home with me. At least the NFL got one game in the long battle to pay off that crazy priced stadium. 75 bucks to park is a farce. I’ll have more on this tomorrw in an interview with David Goodfriend. Be peace my friendzzz.

Minnesota 34, Dallas 3

I pretty much though Sidney Rice would be the star because he poses something different than the Eagles receivers. He’s a lot longer, is deceptively speedy and has blossomed into just as much as a big play receiver this season. He was hungry for this. Top tier receiver in the league next season. One of his 3 touchdown catches reminded me of Bobby Moore’s Miracle Catch vs. the Browns thrown by Tommy Kramer. Dallas couldn’t do anything with the Vikings rush and Romo was sacked 6 times.

Damn right Minnesota ran it up and you’d be a fool not to know why. Even better was that Troy Aikman was doing the game.

Dallas gave up the ball on downs and Minny went straight to the air (3 out of 6 plays)…even on fourth and three…culminated by Favre’s 11 yard strike to Visanthe Shiancoe. It was Shiancoe’s only catch of the game.

I smiled when I saw the replay. I knew what it was…

From Keith Brooking: “I thought it was classless,” Brooking said. “I thought it was B.S. Granted, we get paid to stop them, but we had zero timeouts left. I didn’t think there was any call for that.”

From Pat Williams: “We don’t care what Keith Brooking says,” Williams said. “He was about to get his ass whupped on our sideline over there. It don’t matter. Nobody said anything when they blew out the Eagles. It’s the playoffs. It ain’t no regular-season game. If you lose, you go home. We take no pity on them. Do they expect us to? I don’t care about no Brooking. He can say whatever he wants to say.”

Another thing Keith, what about the elbow to Bernard Berrian’s neck after the tackle near the sideline on the Vikings last drive?

New York Jets 17, San Diego 14

I was totally wrong on this game. I thought the Chargers would do whatever it took to get to the Super Bowl. They were home, had a fantastic season and had so much to prove because everyone and their Pop was calling them chokers the past couple of years. Problem is, Rex Ryan was not having it. Mark Sanchez through his only touchdown early in the fourth to Dustin Keller for the go ahead score. Shonn Greene gashed the Chargers later for a 53 yard run to break San Diego’s back. This all pointed to the initial drive in the game. Sproels slipped on the sideline after catch a pass out of the backfield before the sticks and then Nate Kaeding misses his first field goal inside of 40 yards in almost 2 years right after they put up the graphic? Like Ron Glover said to me, “The Chargers better not let the Jets hang around.” Hang around they did. The Jets run the ball. Straight up. What Ryan learned earlier in the year after Sanchez was throwing the ball all over the place was to limit his passing attempts. Remember I said a couple of weeks back the Colts and the Chargers were last in the league in rushing? The Chargers are home because they could not stop the Jets momentum in the fourth with a long straight up the gut drive, are the Colts next? Could you imagine if this team actually goes to the Super Bowl after what went down with the Giants this season? I know you are happy Chuck.

Darrelle Revis is a monster. That tip, tip, tip boom interception was nice. Jackson had a nice game for the Chargers, but Revis is a stopper. Most of Jackson’s yards were against someone else and the Chargers threw away from Revis for most of the game. Every team needs a Darrelle Revis. It’ll be interesting to see what he does against Reggie Wayne and company next week. He’s shut down some of the best and has been a huge factor in the Jets resurgence.

Indianapolis 20, Baltimore 3

I almost called the score on this one. It was simple, the Colts forced the Ravens to make their young qb throw. Ray Rice had a 5.2 yard per carry average. It was not the running game…Joe Flacco is not a big play quarterback yet. He has the arm and the size, but his head ain’t there yet. On the other side, Peyton did what he does. He was not great, but was efficent enough to win the game. Reed had two interceptions. One was called back because of pass interference. The other he was stripped by Garcon after a long return. Back breakers. The Ravens have been in this position for the last decade because of their stellar defense. It’s a shame they took one step back this year but have nothing to hang their heads over. I’m sure Ray Lewis sees things differently.

The Colts should win going away next week especially after the media will create this bs story about Caldwell resting his players and the Jets just so happening to be the team they face. Was Caldwell penalized for not going after an undefeated season? I say so because I know Marvin Lewis did a fine job holding Cincy together, but Caldwell was 14-0 in his first season. In any other year, that coach takes home Coach of the Year hardware.

New Orleans 45, Arizona 14

While, I’m still not sold until the Saints win the Super Bowl, that they blew the Cardinals out speaks volumes. The MVP was Reggie Bush. He averaged almost 17 yards a carry. He ran over people. Add this with every other weapon the Saints have and you have your score. Offense wasn’t the only hammer, defensively, New Orleans put bass in Warner’s face the entire game. He looked beaten after the gun. He was knocked the Friday out after trying to make a tackle on an interception. Lineart relieved for a spell but was ineffective. New Orleans is a fine team, but after all the slobber they’ve received this season, finish the job. Period. I’ll give them all the props possible when it’s said and done.

Here’s something for you. If Warner retires, does Arizona go after Donovan McNabb (he lives in Arizona)? I sure as hell would. Go get ‘em. They don’t want him here.

Ken Whisenhunt doesn’t believe in Leinert to lead his team, and I believe he will do whatever it takes to get McNabb if Warner retires. Boldin and Fitzgerald along with a legitimate power running game would greatly complement McNabb.

Let the Kolb era begin in Philadelphia, and what will the folks on WIP-610 in Philly blame for the Eagles troubles at that point?

Vick may follow McNabb right out of Philadelphia and go to St. Louis. GM Billy Devaney apparently has interest in Vick being the starting QB in 2010 and desperately trying to keep football relevant in St. Louis. Devaney actually visited Vick while in prison which is a tad unusual even though he was a former assistant GM with the Falocns during the beginning of the Vick years in Atlanta.

The Rams head coach Spagnola wants Suh, and getting Vick would allow the Rams to focus on defense (in the first round)…The St. Louis media is slowly accepting the idea, but there will be critics and skeptics.

  2. Patrick says:

Dallas ran up the score against Philly.

Minnesota ran up the score against Dallas.

And, next week Brett Favre throws two INTs to Darren Sharper and a more focused Reggie Bush will continue to play well as New Orleans bomb Favre’s comeback tour…

  3. Miranda says:

Please oh please do not let it be a Viking-Colt SuperBowl….I would have to not watch a single minute of anything sports related for a month at least. A Farve-Manning matchup is just too much to take.

  4. Damn Jets/Colts, this is why I love this game

Manning is looked upon as the modern day Johnny Unitas w/the black hightops and cropped cut against Marc Sanchez, who is leading a football revival in Gotham by evoking memories of Broadway Joe.

The fate of the NFL may not hinge on this game but I’ll definitely be watching.

  5. mizzo says:

Miranda darling…at this point it doesn’t matter who goes. Slobber for everyone. Just watch, this week leading up to the game the same footage of Joe Namath slapping everybody five will be shown 9 katillionmegamerillion times. Sanchez is gonna be good, but he ain’t good yet. The Jets are winning because of their above average ground game.

QB advertising dollars are gonna be fierce this week.

  6. Jerold Wells Jr says:

Totally forgot about the Childress/Eagles/Cowboys sub plot. That’s why we didn’t take our starters out. That’s why we continued to go after them when the game was in hand. Wow.
My Vikes showed up. Still couldn’t run it like we’ll need to but Favre and SIDNEY RICE put on a show. Keith Brooking and more importantly TERRY BRADSHAW need to shut up. Brooking is a pro, widely respected down here in the A but uh ya’ll got whupped. Plain and simple. If he could actually still cover a tight end maybe Shiancoe doesn’t score. I’m just saying. Bradshaw, what is he talking about. All those Super Bowl wins weren’t close and I’m sure he made some plays over the course of his career when the game was decided. Give it a break. Thats part of the game.

It hurts to watch Baltimore keep losing games. So many true warriors on defense.

Arizona still has a chance to compete for a title but San Fran will be much improved next year.

San Diego self destructed. The penalties, the lack of poise, the costly turnovers. They say teams are a reflection of thier coach, well Norv what’s going on?

  7. HarveyDent says:

    Miz,

You know McNabb will never get any vindication in Philly, win or lose. You’re in that pressure cooker daily when it comes to the media coverage and I’m in it online nightly on the Eagles’ MB and we both know there are segments of Eagles fandom who will never accept McNabb and appreciate the accomplishments he’s achieved individually and team-wise. When the Eagles win it’s in spite of him and when they lose he’s the sole reason they lost.

Following the Eagles all these years and especially the Reid/McNabb Era and it amazes me how our home team while never winning it all has remained competitve all these seasons compared with what came before in the Campbell, Ryan (some success), Kotite, and Rhodes’ tenures and it all can be tied to the fact Reid with an assist from Jim Johnson stabilized the coaching staff and McNabb and Brian Dawkins did the damn thing on the field. Eagles fans are spoiled and if they think this team will be a factor in the NFC East much less the NFL if the front office screws over McNabb then they’ll have to deal with the karma.

…and we all know what karma is.

  8. HarveyDent says:

Now that my daily Eagles rant is over let me tell you I’m still giggling like a schoolgirl over the way the Cowboys got it handed to them yesterday. That Vikings’ front four are beast and Karl Eller, Alan Paige, and the other members of the Purple People Eaters need to watch out because there’s a new posse of butt kickers in the Great White North.

I told all my Cowboys’ fans that they can say whatever they like about McNabb but he’s never scared on the field unlike Romo who was looking for sacks yesterday and looked like he was surprised the times the Vikes didn’t slam him to the ground. That last sack especially I thought they broke him in half. Romo just like many of these glamour boy QB’s will fall apart like a cardboard suitcase if constant pressure is put on them. IE Eli Manning, Brady, and Cutler. Guys like McNabb, Warner, Rodgers, and even Fav-ray will take the hits and still come back for more.

The Vikes better be ready down in NOLA this weekend because if the light has gone on for Reggie Bush then they can forget the Miami vacation.

Fly Jets Fly!!! I ain’t saying they’ll beat the Colts on Sunday but I ain’t bettin’ against ‘em either.

  9. Miranda says:

you right Mizz, but I can take slobbering over the Brees and the Saints – I can take silly ass slobbering over Mark “please dont let it be another interception’ Sanchez…..but a Farve-Manning lineup? You wouldn’t hear from me between next Monday and President’s Day…I would have to completely turn it ALL OFF.

  10. Mizzo says:

Trust me, I haven’t watched a sports show since Thanksgiving…

  11. TheCoach says:

The majority of people are taking the Colts to kill the Jets this week but you have to consider how well New York matches up against Indy. Indy has the worst running game in the league, and is ALL Peyton. The Jets have the #1 pass-defence and if they can put the clamps on Peyton early… it could very well be a Jets win. TheCoach isn’t calling a J-E-T-S JETS JETS JETS win but they will cover the spread. I know Indy shut down Baltimore’s running game last week but the Jets strive on being quick and elusive.. something Ray Rice isn’t…

Minnesota and New Orleans is going to be such a good game. I was hoping all season long these two would meet up in the NFC Championship and honestly.. either team could team this game. The Saints are -3.0 favourites and historically home team get given three points for the home-field advantage… so basically this game is a pick-em and there is ONE thing that I like about the Saints and its that home-field advantage. Last week Warner and Romo combined for 7 sacks and 4 fumbles largely in part to not being able to communicate with their offence. The SuperDome is NUTS and I don’t care how much experience Favre has, the crowd can help a team and also hurt the other so much.

Feel free to check out my picks with scores (and of course cheerleader pictures) @ http://www.lionsdenu.com/category/sports/nfl-guide-2009-2010/

Best of luck to all this week,
    Regards,
    TheCoach

  12. Temple3 says:

    Coach —

I was with you until you said Ray Rice isn’t quick and elusive.

If you’d said that Baltimore’s line lacks the experience and overall skill of the Jets line, I could certainly agree with that.

If you’d said that Greene and Jones give the Jets a credible chance of winning because of fresh legs and experience, I could certainly agree with that.
