Friday Fire: Who is YOUR Greatest NFL Player of All-Time?

As Jerry Rice and Emmitt Smith head a class of potentially one of the greatest Hall of Fame classes in NFL history, we ourselves have our picks about who is worthy of such an honor. I would like to hear from the TSF faithful as well as our newcomers – who is YOUR Greatest NFL Player of All-Time?

Is your criteria based on the guy with some of the most hardware….

or the intense one with the menacing glare?

Maybe it’s the man who set the standard for the rest…

It doesn’t have to be any of the above. Who’s your best?

Nice Rhyming, Ron. So let me go and get one.

There is one guy. You Could say he’s rather fly.

Better than best, he set records beyond compare. Best at his position, there ain’t no one else even there.

The answer to this question ain’t naughty or nice. My pick: Jerry Rice.

  2. Okori Wadsworth says:

no prob. Should I do the olympic hockey post or do you want me to?

  3. Ron Glover says:

Sure post whatever/whenever you like. That’s a good thing because it’s off the beaten path.

  4. Okori Wadsworth says:

I can’t find the qualifying round brackets. This is reallly frustrating.

  5. Clifton says:

If I was in my 50′s I would say Jim Brown but since I wasn’t born when he played I will go with someone whose games I actually watched. Jerry Rice in his prime was the best player of all time.

  6. HarveyDent says:

I’ll go with the guy who set the standard, Jim Brown. Like Clifton, I never saw him play but from all the highlights I’ve seen he definitely is a timeless player. Tough and intense as Ray Lewis, prolific as much as Jerry Rice, an championships to boot. All done before he was thirty and then stepping away and staying away in his prime? Damn, JB was a true football OG.

  7. KevDog says:

I’m absolutely going with Okori and Clifton on this. IMO, Rice and it isn’t even close. At every other position on the field, a legitimate argument could be made for 1 of 5 or 6 players except Punter and WR And come on, ain’t nobody gonna name Ray Guy GOAT.

Jerry Rice simply dwarfs all other WR’s in career stats, in his prime was as good an any WR ever in any other prime and played at a high level for an insane amount of time. He was a number 2 receiver in the NFL when he was 40! Unbelievable.

  8. Ron Glover says:

Rice is 7,000 yards ahead of #2 Issac Bruce and 8,400+ yards ahead of #4 Terrell Owens and #5 Marvin Harrison.

In the words of the late, great Rick James, “That is ABSURD!”

  9. Okori Wadsworth says:

My argument against Ray Lewis is that he isn’t even really the best middle linebacker of all time.

  10. Ron Glover says:

I wasn’t trying to say that he was, I know he isn’t in that convo.

For my money the best MLB will always be Jack Lambert.

  11. Okori Wadsworth says:

My point was that he can;t be called the best of all time if he’s not even the best all-time at his own position.

  12. Ron Glover says:

Are you having any luck finding the Olympic hockey rosters?

  13. Okori Wadsworth says:

rosters weren’t the issue. the brackets were.

  14. mapoui says:

I am torn between OJ simpson and Kellen winslow

  15. RBD says:

To me, the greatest player of all time is Jerry Rice.
Rice is the best WR ever. Who’s the second best?
Now think about this for a minute.
I’m not sure who the No. 2 WR is, but I’m pretty sure of this: The gap between Rice and No. 2 is greater than the gap between the first and second players at any other position. In other words, Rice excelled in his job more than anybody else excelled at his job.
    That’s my rationale.

  16. Matthew Fudge says:

I’d be better able to answer if this was a “top-5″ question.

  17. GrandNubian says:

I’m torn between Walter Payton and Jim Brown. I never saw JB play because he retired before i was born. Walter Payton was the best i ever seen play. However, at the end of the day, I gotta go with JB. He was a man among boys.

I can’t give it to a WR because much of his success also stems from the QB throwing him the ball. So, the QB would have to get just as much of the credit.

  18. mapoui says:

the receiver still must catch the ball and it is his ability to do so that decides that a receiver can be considerd as great.

some receivers made some quarterbacks great and made some very good quaterbacks look great.

landrys cowboys had a couple of clutch receivers preston pearson and butch johnson who would catch anything at all thrown their way in playoff games…especially with the game on the line.

Kellen winslow did the same with dan fouts. winslow at tight end had the ability go long…a huge indiviudal with very quick feet and brilliantly sure hands.

no sir I disagree! receivers can stand on their own to be considered among the greast and the best ever…I am certain of that!

  19. Ron Glover says:

@ Matthew Fudge, I’ll take your top 5 in that order.
