Friday Fire: Pacquiao vs Clottey. Who Ya Got?

It’s not the fight that we all wanted. Whose fault it is now is not germane to the plot.
Here is the question: The Filipino Hurricane or the stolid Ghanaian? Make your picks and defend them.

Here is the question: The Filipino Hurricane or the stolid Ghanaian? Make your picks and defend them.
My answer: Pacquiao.
Too fast, too consistent. There is no way that the Clottey who fought against Cotto beats Manny. That guy took sections of the fight off. You could tell. Plus, he left Cotto the chance to take the fight over and Miguel did.
Pacman.
PacMan but don’t be surprised if Clottey gives him all he can handle. There’s something to be said for predictability if you do it right.
@HarveyDent: It’s not that he’s predictable. It’s that he has never been in a fight this big before and the closest he got to it was against Cotto, where he let Miguel off the hook with the fight on the line.
Clottey didn’t lose that fight as much as they awarded it to Cotto. There were areas in the fight where he wasn’t as aggressive and it may have cost him. Did you really think they were gonna give that fight to Clottey with a date w/Pacquio looming.
Reminded me of Oscar De La Hoya/Felix Sturm. Strum beat Oscar like a drum but had it taken away because of De La Hoya’s pending fight with Bernard Hopkins.
ah boxing…gone the way of milk, clothes, shoes…standardised and manufactured to suit maximum profits…
oh well!
there is something however about Pacman that must be answered at some point…why is he?
hope Clottey helps clear up the situation.
@Mapoui, I believe a fighter like Clottey can come in and disrupt the natural order of things.
the aggressiveness of Clottey is my point, Ron. There are times where he pulls on the brake.
and Mapoui: the same drug testing thing right? that’s what you mean?
Okori, I think he realizes what’s REALLY at stake and if he can jump on him he won’t let up as long as he doesn’t get careless.
Ron, the question is can he jump on him?
I believe that he (Clottey) will try to dictate the pace of the fight. He’ll try to pressure him from the outset.
wow! I had to attent to soemthing and missed these…..
yes I mean the drug testing thing. I mean Pacman could be for real…there are always the exception to the general trend.
but the pacman is real suspicious!
and I agree Ron..once he is totally focused! Clottey is bigger, can bruise the pacman.
if Clottey is on his game I wish to see how pacman stands up or overwhelms him.
that should be interesting!
well…somewhat bigger anyway. looking forward to the fight. it going to be very interesting in several important ways.
I really wish to know if the pacman is for real…no enhancers!
did clottey come to fight or play the fool?
did he make a deal before the fight that leaves Pacman/weather fight intact?
espn describes Clottey as strangely passive in the fight! yeah right!
this is why I left boxing just about 100% alone since the passing of the career of the wonderfully skilled, easten bomber, Larry Holmes.
there hasnt been a champion as skilled as he ever since…not even Evander whom I respect a great deal.
I give in to Arum, King and company. they can keep what is current boxing all to themselves
Mapoui: Are you one of these people who think that Manny can’t be this good because he’s filipino, or because he started out as a flyweight, or because he’s on PED’s? Because barring those 3….. what else does the guy have to do?
He carved up Miguel Cotto and dominated Joshua Clottey. Really what else does he have to do to get respect from certain corners in the conscious sports blogosphere?
yes I am one of those wadsworth.
Paquiao can get my respect if he agrees to a sequestration barn where he will reside for a month prior to a fight them go out and win as usual agains a tuff opponent
ha ha haha!
seriously its clear how I feel about the guy! maybe in time….
but such an oponent must not be clottey or anyone close.
I dont understand clottey…not in the least!
I like Pacquiao, I just thought that Clottey would be hungry enough to put up a serious challenge.
clotteys’ face on the screen suggests a very malleable sort of individual…hardly the killer one desires in a boxing ring .
clottey looks well-behaved, docile, courteous, a gentleman…probably a serious christian.
clottey is in the wrong sport!
clottey should build a purse and move on to other, more peaceful persuits..investments…although as capitalist investment I have no idea in which possible of those there could be peace?
ha ha haha! how many hot buttons in there!?
Serious Christians can be in the fight game. It’s really not an impossibility. The trick is that all of those serious christians knew how to fight when it was time to.
believe me I know serious christians can fight.
we know of christian missionary fervor for eg, that resulted in natives being dispatched to heaven by the million.
anything for the twin….god and profit
and we can see how muslims fare currently at the hands of christians!
yes christians can fight! and we know for what!
yet it seems necessary to make a diff between african christian and others..just a diff not a judgement for all are capable of extreme violence..but for what..driven by what?
in some parts of africa there seems always violent tension between muslims and christians.
is Paquiao a muslim?
if Packman is catholic as most philinios are, that wont do.
muslim might have been the red flag necessary to animate clottey and make him charge.
I have seen africans all over like clottey appears to be…sedated in routine life.
in personal experience I could find only christianity as reason the apparent sedation.
I dont know if clottey is in fact christian and serious in his belief. but in is docility he looks the part!
I’m sorry. Maybe i’m off of it.
but….. what the hell does that have to do with boxing?
And by the way…. it’s Pacman, not Packman. show him a little respect. he’s at least earned that.
I did not name the guy! why in the hell should I take responsibility for how his name is written!
were you the one who named him, so solicitous you are about how it is presented?
yes I may have run all to hell away there with christians…as if I have a chip there too. ( I do ) sorry you could not work your way through it.
but I was searching for clotteys button..what would trigger an all out effort on his part..an effort that would prolly defeat Packman..or bruise him terribly.
“Final punch stats showed Pacquiao landing 246 of 1,231 punches to 108 of 399 for Clottey.” espn
(they must have put lead in that bwoys gloves before the fight!)
and pf course pakman, packman, packman watever, has earned no respect with more more than ordinary.
he can fight a bit sure.
but there is no reason in the world Joshua clottey should not have put up up a better effort….
something does not smell right!
I will gladly continue this debate with you when I get home from the gym.
But let me say this…… accusing a fight of being fixed is a slippery slope. And yeah Clottey should have put up a better effort. But maybe, just maybe, it wasn’t because of something skethcy or out-and-out Top Rank told him not to fight back or they’d kill his chold or some shit like that. Maybe it’s because he got in that ring and choked, or because Manny’s ALWAYS been good ever since the second he was able to have a legit training camp and nutrition regimen. I watched this guy since he blew through Lehlo ledwaba at Jr. Featherweight. I bet there are some antii-pacquiao guys who can’t even name the 2 LEGENDS he beat.
ok so let me be honest! Pacman can fight! I give him that! there is ability there. he is quick, tuff!
and I do believe Mayweather does not want to fight him, is afraid he will lose to Paquiao.
it would be a really good fight and if maywether goes in to really battle he should come out the winner…if he belives in himself and is not afraid to lose.
but he is afraid. I would bet on that!
yet naturally a fighter like Pacman raise suspicions. Pacman should be mindful of that and seek to alay such fears as best he could. there are many ways it cn be done without compromising his regimen or having to draw blood when he does not want to.
Clottey is a puzzle! 300 punches? I was amazed at his lack of aggression.
and my friends girlfriend who is Philipino was there and she was all for you know who…and we were stunned that clottey would not fight.
my friend and I thought clotteys size and strenght should overwhelm the smaller guy in time but clottey never fought.
about the slippery slope I dont know! I dont look at sport with blinkers of any kind. any sport can be and is prolly fixed!
I used to have a lot of faith in english horse racing as the pinnacle of horse racing until it was revealed that it is fixed, that some real big guys are involved and that it is not likley to be cleaned up anytime soom.
that is a huge and formerly prestigious industry. but it is organized like any bureaucracy and can be manipulated from the top down.
if Arum and kind did anything its was to bureaucratise boxing and render it fixable to enth degree just like eveything else is fixed up to and including the money…everywhere in the world.
if the american dollar could have been taken over and counterfeited..continues in the face of the world….what is boxing to corrupt?
I see in nfl football, basketball, FIFA soccer etc., games called seemingly to produce results that benefit the likely intent of those who run the sport.
I dont know if boxing is fixed! what I know is that it can be fixed, quite easily,…far easier than horse racing for example. and now we know horse racing is fixed often enough…and in england probably all the time now!
I saw Joshua Clottey non-fight saturday night! there has to be an explanation. I looked at clottery and I saw no physical disability, no facial cringes to suggest stomach problems or food poisonings. in hindsight his skin tone .
if yu have the fight on tape go look at him and see if you can discern anything physical or empotional that might have affected his effort negatively.
I saw nothing, can remember nothing as I try to map our every minute of it.
sorry for the mistakes in the post above! I meant his skin tone shone..clotteys! he was fine as far as i could tell.
I dont know for a fact if boxing is fixed or not..but it probably is!
I respect your position on Pacman. I see you respect the guy and yu have said why!
I do not look out for any but my own really! thats just the way it is with me and I do not apologise for it.
it seems to me that others take care of themselves and do not need me for that.
so good or not Pacman is not my concern. my concern is for one of my own to defeat him…period! take the money, the crown and the prestige.
haha ha ha ha
and bear with me if yu can man! at times I run right off saying much more than is necessary.
I must be getting old!
ha ha ha haha ha
here would be the entirety of my response:
i respect people if they do things to earn my respect.
good answer! but to me thats not all there is to it.
but here we must leave it for the moment!
Who said Mapoui? I am actually enjoying having this debate.
