The Boss Is Gone: George Steinbrenner Dies at 80

Twice suspended from baseball. Paid a gambler to find dirt on Dave Winfield. Fired 17 managers. All kinds of egotistical craziness but George Steinbrenner won. 7 World Series titles. 11 pennants. 16 division titles. Homegrown superstars and free agent legends. He did it his way. Steinbrenner died today at around 6:30 this morning of a massive heart attack after years of declining health in Tampa, Florida.

He was 80.

He owned basketball teams, he was an assistant football coach but he was known first and foremost as owner of the New York Yankees. It’s not a coincidence the Yankees were defending champions and held the best record in the league heading into the All Star break.

Tuesday Morning Starting Five: John Wall Looks Great So Far

Wall gets instruction from coach Sam Cassell

Spoke to this kid at the draft and came away very impressed with his media savvy. Though he’s averaging 8 turnovers in his first two games, John Wall looks like the real deal. He gets to the whole with the quickness of ease and runs the team well. Of course he’ll cut down on the turnovers and take his speed down just a notch to become NBA game effective.
