Tuesday Morning Starting Five: Brett Favre “Reportedly” Retires; LeBron Thanks Akron

So…Brett Lorenzo Favre has “decided” to hang ’em up after 16 seasons which include 285 straight starts. That’s a ridiculous number when you think about it. Two hundred eighty five. My favorite moment of Favre’s career was the game he played on Monday Night Football a day after he learned his Pop passed.

4 was 2nd round pick (33rd overall) in the 1991 draft by the Atlanta Falcons. His meat years were played in a Green Bay Packer uniform and then had subsequent 1 year stints with the New York Jets and the Minnesota Vikings. Now, he’s retired…

I don’t believe it. Rarely a cynic, but I damn sure am when it comes to Favre. It should be noted we haven’t heard from 4 or the Vikings. To be honest, I dug Brett during his career. He’s a passionate leader who gives you a chance to win every time out (497 td passes most all time). His career does have that duality because Brett seemed to throw that inexplicable pick (317, most all time and 200 more than McNabb to put the number in perspective) when the game is on the line. He was 181-104, won a Super Bowl and also three MVP trophies. I’d put him in the top ten all time. Didn’t like all the cojones swinging by the press because at its spike it was straight ridiculous (it’s about to get worse) but you gotta give it to 4 on the field.

Which leads us to another athlete who folks love to hate…LeBron James.

James was born and raised in Akron, Ohio. He speaks glowingly of his hometown often and does tremendous community service there. I remember a game in DC where it seemed he was pulling up from the town he still calls home and when I asked him about it, his smile was one I won’t forget. Yesterday, he took out a full page ad thanking the city:

“To My Family, Friends and Fans in Akron: “For all my life, I have lived in Akron — and for that, I am truly a lucky man. It was here where I first learned how to play basketball, and where I met the people who would become my lifelong friends and mentors. Their guidance, encouragement and support will always be with me. Akron is my home, and the central focus of my life. It’s where I started, and it’s where I will always come back to. You can be sure that I will continue to do everything I can for this city, which is so important to my family and me. Thank you for your love and support. You mean everything to me.”

The irony surrounding these two mega stars is that their decisions will be compared to untold lengths…one good, one bad.

I asked LeBron’s camp why Cleveland wasn’t included in the ad. Everything is speculation until we get an answer.

Addendum: 8/3/10 4:56 pm

LeBron’s camp: “He took the ad in the Akron Beacon Journal thanking the community as that is where he is from and where his annual Bikeathon is held which is this week. Nothing intentional. Just thanking them for their continued support.”

There you have it.

Back foot Brett (as Temple likes to call him) will be back. Dude just chilling till the saints game in week 1.

If he actually is retiring he cost the Vikings Mcnabb and held the team hostage once again. Yet will not get a quarter of the hate Lebron got…….nor will fools, I mean fans run around in the streets burning his jersey. Nor will the GM or sports radio folks call him out (like they did Bosh and Lebron).

So my back foot int throwing alma mater buddy Brett will disappear for good or until week 1 unscathed. No heat or darts thrown from the MSM.

Yeap Captain America/ The Greatest American Hero has pulled another fast one.

I am not surprised that Lebron thanked Akron with a full page ad. Lebron has always made it a point to say he’s from Akron not Cleveland. Its always the media who references Cleveland. LBJ has always been loyalty to his hometown. Thus I say good move Lebron.

Great point about McNabb. I thought of it when I posted this O. Hopefully Tavaris will hold it down.

Man, damn a Brett Favre. Moving on.

Good column about HOF’er Jerry Rice

Yo, Mizz, the Baby Eaglets are dropping like flies. First, DJax’s aching back and now J-Mac’s knee. What’s going on? Karma?

Brett Farvevre just needs to go away. That said, if the media was inhabiting his derriere, he wouldn’t be able to play ’em like Bud Powell on the drums. Dude is destroying his legacy and making himself the butt of so many jokes.

Re: LeBron thanking Akron – he’s always repped Akron so….nothin’ to see here..keep movin’ on. It’s not like Akron is a tiny city and he ignored Cleveland for a tiny village. He’s always been loyal to Akron.

I wonder how much momentum this story will pick up. 🙂

  7. Mizzo says:

Discussed this yesterday with writers. I need confirmation before I comment. Soon as that happens, I’m definitely on it.

  8. Origin says:

Yeah I saw that GN……….I doubt that makes any noise.

I will be surprised if its talked about past this weekend.

Even if its true……..ain’t nobody trying to tarnish captain americas legacy.

I linked to a piece Dwil wrote. We had a long conversation earlier about this mess. Nubian, you are correct brotha, this will not go away soon. Brett’s only relief is that tomorrow is Friday.
