Kenny McKinley 1987-2010

Kenny McKinley was a wide receiver with the Denver Broncos on injured reserve. He may have been known only to a few outisde of Denver and his home state of South Carolina.

That should not make his death any less important.

While I watched replay after replay of Monday night’s game on SportsCenter, I saw on the sidebar tab that an NFL player had died. I knew it wasn’t a familiar name because it wasn’t even in “The Lead” scroller at the bottom of the screen. It was a little after 5 this morning when I saw that it was Kenny McKinley of the Denver Broncos. I knew that I couldn’t get it on the site fast enough so I brought my laptop to work just to show the young man’s family that even though he won’t be remembered as a standout player during his short NFL career it doesn’t mean that he has to be forgotten in his passing either.

This isn’t a swipe at ESPN or any other media outlet. And I won’t fake it like I knew who Kenny McKinley was – this is simply what we do here at The Starting Five.

Depression is a serious issue in the Black Community and from what I saw on ESPN that the young man was suicidal. We as a people need to be able to unload our burdens in this life and accept counseling or medicine if that what helps us overcome in this thing called life. Far too many young Black Folks are committing suicide when it doesn’t have to be that way.

    sorry for the mispells

Peaceful journey to the young man and I hope he’s found the peace he couldn’t find on this plane. Condolences to his family especially his young son.
