The Starting Five

The Christmas Day games to open the season are nothing but NBA pr fodder. League wide roster turnovers (still moves to be made?), new coaches, barely any training camp and back to back to backs, will distort the usual process of players getting their legs before everything gets serious. There’s really no need in over analyzing yesterday’s games as a result because very few teams have played enough with each other.

Before all of current craziness ensues and the Clippers anointed the Kings of LA, let’s see Los Angeles battle an opponent that’s better defensively.

That being said, how in the hell does Donald Sterling get to own such a pretty team? He’s the racist cat whose stocking should be nothing but coal so…he now has a point guard to throw lobs to Jordan and Griffin while hitting clutch jumpers in rest of NBA faces?

Oklahoma City, the popular pick to represent the Western Conference in the Finals began its quest for world NBA domination with a convincing victory over the Orlando Magic, 97-89. Durant lit up Orlando for 30 while Kendrick Perkins…and company…held Dwight Howard to 11 points on 4-11 shooting. Howard did have 15 rebounds.

Derrick Rose is humble. Looking at his game, some are indifferent to his voice when speaking because of his humility. He has all the athletic skills of anyone who has ever played the game and heading into his 4th season, the Bull Wonder already has an MVP to his credit. Think about a player who never watched anyone but Mike and Scottie (he told me this as a rookie), heading into LA to face Mike’s basketball son, Kobe Bryant, in the first game after losing to Miami in last season’s ECF. He knows what’s there for him. The proverbial expectations will be high and everyone knows Rose wants a ring. He’ll tell you the Memphis loss to Kansas is far in the rear view (more he’s blocking it out) , but we all know losing the big ones inspire the would be great ones.

After Dallas defeated Miami to claim the NBA 2010-2011 championship, the series seemed to be of what the Heat didn’t do instead of what the Mavericks did and all criticism was directed at LeBron James…he still the one smelling of wunderkind and Cleveland scorn. Yesterday, the banner was raised in Dallas but it appeared these weren’t the same Mavs who were champions. These were some other cats…
