Cam this record breaking year: 3,893 yards in air, 674 on ground. 20 passing td’s, 14 rushing. 60% completion rate. 16 picks. One game left in his rookie year.
Let’s discuss what Cam Newton recently told ESPN for its NEXT issue: “I can’t sit up here and look at it like, oh man, my critics are racist. I blame JaMarcus Russell and to some degree Vince Young. If you have the opportunity to make that kind of money doing something you love to do, why would you screw it up? I’m trying to be a trailblazer. If Baylor’s Robert Griffin decides to come out, I want people to say ‘He can be the next Cam Newton’ instead of ‘He’s gonna be the next JaMarcus Russell.’”
Watch it Cam. You will get criticized for this and rightfully so…from everyone. Might as well call JaMarcus and Vince and get it over with.
In a round about way, I totally get what he’s saying. He wants a standard of excellence to begin from within. He doesn’t want every quarterback coming into the league to be judged based on what JaMarcus did or didn’t do but on the same hand, letting the media off the hook isn’t the answer either. Don’t kiss the media’s ass if you don’t have to. You will be judged whether you do so or not because there is still many a pundit who just won’t give it up to the Black quarterback.
Cam will look back on what he said and cringe one day because Cam when you don’t come up big in critical spots you will get slammed in the press. Some of it will be objective and other criticism will be raced based, but you can’t worry about that. The culture is what it is (evidenced by his spectacular year getting lost nationally in the absurd Tim Tebow hype) and it’s quite obvious Blacks being in leadership positions on or off the field is something some will never get used to.
So what. Let the haters hate…
Cam you know what it is…it’s the smile and the way you make the NFL look so easy at times. Don’t stop having fun. As a reporter, I see when the eyes die as young players become veterans. Don’t let anything kill that star you shine so fine.
We’ll speak on it every way we know how and your legacy with others will be documented.
Because Cam Newton is the prototype for the next generation of quarterback (there has never been one as physically gifted) and doesn’t fit the classic pocket passer mold, he will be asked questions peers won’t be asked so he better have a strong public relations support base to school him accordingly.
Many said he wasn’t good enough and will never publicly admit they erred in analyzing his skill set translating from the SEC to the NFL.
He’ll most likely play in the Pro Bowl simply because a qb or two might not make the trip for whatever reason. During the telecast, his first year will be mentioned. He’ll most likely be the first qb ever to toss for 4,000 yards in his rookie season. Think about it, he possibly could end up with over 4,800 combined yards…as a first year player.
The Panthers, winners of 4 of 5, have something to look forward to. After winning just 2 games last season, Carolina has a chance to be 3 times that in ’11-’12 and finish 6-10. A receiver in the first round and shoring up the defense is a major priority.
Seems like Cam will get pub as the season wanes…just don’t let it be for the wrong reason young fella and if you say something, stand by it.
The streets…and most definitely the sheets…are watching.
