A Statement to United States Attorney General Eric Holder Re: Trayvon Martin Case From Dr. Harry Edwards, George Raveling, John Thompson, John Chaney and Nolan Richardson
Will we ever see a time when the lives of Black children are not open for debate?
Yesterday, I received a call from David Leonard asking if I would post the below statement from Dr. Harry Edwards and legendary former college basketball head coaches George Raveling, John Thompson, John Chaney and Nolan Richardson. I’m honored to do so. I’ve spoken to Elton Brand regarding Trayvon and Ron has done the same with Josh Smith, Joe Johnson and Kirk Hinrich and also attended a rally here in Philadelphia.
Of course this is not a sports story, but that athletes and other high profile folk feel compelled to speak out on this issue means strong emotions abound. The icons below are no strangers to cultural discourse, and releasing such a powerful statement means 43 days and no arrest is an indictment on our justice system that says the importance of laws override the actual lives of the citizens laws are created to protect.
To: Eric Holder, United States Attorney General
We urge the immediate implementation of all prescribed legal and judicial actions and options applicable in establishing the circumstances of Trayvon Martin’s death and in bringing the person responsible to justice. We also request an immediate review of how the Trayvon Martin case was handled by responsible law enforcement officials and by the hierarchy of civil officials to whom those law enforcement personnel were ultimately accountable. As devastating as the senseless killing of this young man is, worse is the impression left in its wake that the institutional machinery of justice has been utterly dismissive of his tragic death and even supportive of the acknowledged killer to the point of excusing, if not outright “covering up” his culpability.
It is our conviction that the smiling young man so widely pictured in his athletic uniform and his family deserve more than to be consigned to the status of yet another “statistic”. They and this nation, deserve and demand justice – nothing more, nothing less.
Dr. Harry Edwards
Coach George Raveling
Coach John Thompson
Coach John Chaney
Coach Nolan Richardson
