Williams, who was wearing a helmet en route to prepare for his brother’s wedding later that day tried to avoid another car in the next lane that was negotiating a curve and had to maneuver to avoid an oncoming car. Williams’ was thrown from his bike, landing on his back and head. A witness to the accident contacted police immediately and Williams was taken to the hospital.

Williams’ manager George Peterson told the Associated Press that Williams is coherent, in good spirits but is in denial about his condition.

He still believes he’s going to fight again.

Williams was scheduled to fight Saul ”Canelo” Alvarez on Sept. 15 in Las Vegas but that event has been canceled, Peterson said. Williams had a career record of 41-2 with notable wins over Antonio Margarito, Carlos Quintana, Winky Wright, Sergio Martinez and Kermit Cintron. At 6’2″ and 147 lbs. Williams lanky frame and reach made him a less than desirable opponent. But Williams became a star in the sport as one of boxing’s best pound-for-pound fighters.

Although doctors have closed the book on Williams’ career Peterson remains somewhat hopeful.

“I want to think along with him, ’cause I’ve seen him do things in his boxing career that shouldn’t have happened.”
