For the better part of her career, Serena Williams has been able to battle through the mental and physical bumps and bruises that have come with being one of the best tennis players in the world - male or female.

Yesterday, in the first round of the French Open, the dam broke.

Williams struggled early and fought back against 111th ranked Virginie Razzano from France but after 3 hours and 3 minutes Williams would be upset by the unheralded Razzano 4-6, 7-6 (5) and 6-3. Williams led 5-1 in a second set tie-breaker before dropping 13 straight points. The defeat was Williams’ first ever in the first round of any Grand Slam event which Serena along with sister Venus has made their personal playground.

For Razzano the moment was sweet because here fiance’ and longtime coach Stephane Vidal died from a brain tumor in May, 2011. Vidal encouraged Razzano to go into the tournament, who in retrospect is glad that she did.

Not to be overlooked, were the last 10 months of the lives of Venus and Serena both dealing with serious health issues. When asked about Razzano’s plight Serena was quick to remind the press that she almost died last year from blood clot and that her sister Venus still suffers from Sjogrens Syndrome, a fatigue-inducing disease. Never one to make excuses, Serena indicated that she was 100 percent healthy for the match. Serena would go on to say later fighting back tears, I’ve been through so much in my life, and … I’m not happy, by no means.

I thought Serena was about to comeback and nope, wasn’t happening.

  2. mapoui says:

its getting as lil’ late! should Serena and Venus be thinking about retirement?

Serena looked magnificent as usual. but both sisters have been up against it physically for some time and they are both 30-30+

I would hate to see them go out losing consistently, playing past their prime.

  3. They’ve never really done well at the French Open.

They both know they’re better than everyone else and when they see the current state of the tour, they both think they can run roughshod over the youngins. Sometimes they’re body doesn’t get the memo. They ain’t done yet.
