Tip-Off for 6/13/12 (featuring Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five): A-Rod ties Lou Gehrig with 23rd career grand slam, Dodgers re-up Ethier for 5 years at $85 million, Maurice Jones-Drew holding out on Jags

New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez hit his 23rd career grand slam in the eighth inning to rally the Yankees to a 6-4 win over the Atlanta Braves last night. The slam moved A-Rod into a tie with Yankees great Lou Gehrig for the all-time leader in that category. Rodriguez had been batting 10 for 67 (.149) this season before the slam. The Yankees won their season-high fifth consecutive game and moved into sole possession of first place in the AL East.

The formidable duo of Matt Kemp and Andre Ethier will be together in Dodger Blue for the forseeable future. In the first major move under new ownership that includes Magic Johnson, the team resigned Ethier to a 5-year deal worth $85 million. Ethier and the team avoided arbitration earlier this year when he agreed to a $10.95 million contract for this season.

The Jacksonville Jaguars have made it clear to franchise running back Maurice Jones-Drew that they will not renegotiate his current. Jones in turn, has decided to hold out from the team’s mandatory mini-camp this week. Jones-Drew, who led the NFL in rushing last season with 1,606 yards has two years remaining on a deal scheduled to pay him a little more than $9 million over the next two seasons. Considering that Jones-Drew is one of the more durable backs and the Jags are having trouble putting backsides in seats – the brass may want to think this one over.
