Houston Rockets Head Coach Kevin McHale Discusses Jeremy Lin on NBA TV

Gotham City no more…

Houston Rockets head coach Kevin McHale joined NBA TV’s Joel Meyers and Brent Barry to discuss the team’s acquisition of Jeremy Lin during the Houston Rockets vs. Chicago Bulls Summer League game last night in Las Vegas.

Okori has a Lin piece coming first thing in the morning.

McHale on Jeremy Lin joining the Houston Rockets: “Jeremy Lin is a young guy. He’s a young kid that is really learning the game and learning how to play. It will be interesting to see how he grows as a player and I’m looking forward to coaching him.”

McHale’s advice to Lin: “I told Jeremy he has to be a basketball player. He has got to be able to run the team, run offense, catch and shoot, be a basketball player and do a little bit of everything.”

McHale on why the Rockets selected Lin: “We really needed a point guard. He fits where we are with a young rebuilding team; a team that is going to grow together. He is so young and he fits where we are going right now.”

McHale on Lin’s growth: “A part of his game that he has really worked on is his shooting. He is very realistic about his game and all the things he has to work on. He understands that he is a work in progress.”

Since when does a “work in progress” sign for 25 million???

Can somebody give me one BASKETBALL reason why the Rockets just egregiously overpaid for this cat?

  2. To secure the fan base Yao left behind. 25 million is a bargain.

  3. TheLastPoet says:

Indeed, but is that a basketball reason?

  4. TheLastPoet says:

Or are you saying that he is worth $25 million even if he can’t play?

  5. Okori Wadsworth says:

For the record, TLP, i don’t think he can’t play. Like are you now saying he’s a scrub?

But I’m not going to comment anymore on this. I have an article on the very subject coming up tomorrow morning.

    @ LP:

Regardless of what anyone thinks of Lin’s game, I don’t believe there is a compelling basketball reason for letting Kyle Lowry and Goran Dragic leave the team.

Financial reasons abound, but basketball reasons are few and far between.

  7. Exactly what Temple says. Kyle Lowry is a budding star and Dragic has his value as well. This was a money grab. Who else offered?

The fact is when Jeremy doing the PG poistion, everyone else plays better… even Jeremy himself doesn’t…. call it supernature… call it emotional… everyone’s confident got push up one level …. and everyone got a chance to score and win .. instead of watching some superstar to score while playing on his iphone….

this alone is hard to find someone else to do…. and for such price is well worth… compare to other players… Houston got a smartest move in the NBA league…. there should have more teams offer Jeremey… that is what being the surprise instead …. in my opinion..
