Pablo Sandoval launches his first of three home runs in the first inning of Game 1.
Pablo Sandoval and his San Francisco Giants teammates have been told by everyone how the pitching of Detroit Tigers ace Justin Verlander would be the story of these World Series.
Apparently, they were tired of hearing it.
Sandoval introduced himself to Verlander and the record books as he crushed three home runs (two off Verlander) in the Giants stunning 8-3 victory to take Game 1 of the World Series last night.
Pablo Sandoval became the fourth player to hit three home runs in a World Series game, joining Albert Pujols (2011), Reggie Jackson (1977) and Babe Ruth (1926 and 1928) . The Giants third baseman homered in the first, third and fifth innings. Sandoval also become the fourth Venezuelan-born player to homer in the Fall Classic (Dave Concepcion, Alex Gonzalez and Miguel Cabrera).
In his only other meeting against Verlander, Sandoval hit a triple in this year’s All-Star game. Last night the big fella went 4 for 4 with 4 RBIs and 13 total bases.
One of more colorful and beloved players in baseball, Sandoval aka Kung Fu Panda hit just 12 home runs this season and has never hit more than two in a game. It’s been a struggle for Sandoval at times. Since 2010 he has dealt with being benched behind weight issues which affected his production at the plate. He still carries the girth, but has managed it better when it comes to his overall play.
Going into Game 1 of the 2010 series, the Giants appeared to be overmatched by the Texas Rangers Cliff Lee who was 3-0 with a .75 ERA.
Cliff Lee’s Game 1 line was anything but stellar giving up seven runs, six earned in 4.2 innings.
Verlander’s line heading into last night was 3-0 with a .074 ERA with 25 strikeouts. The Giants roughed him up for five runs in four innings.
San Francisco had three players other than Sandoval with two or more hits. Marco Scuturo continued his hot streak with two more RBIs.
Barry Zito pitched 5.2 innings, allowing one run on six hits and striking out three. Zito helped his own cause with a base hit and RBI in the 4th inning.
The Tigers weren’t able to generate any offense. The trio of Miguel Cabrera, Prince Fielder and Delmon Young went 4 for 11 with one RBI.
