Tip-Off for 10/29/12 (featuring Dave Chappelle): San Francisco Giants defeat Detroit Tigers 4-3 to sweep World Series

Reliever Sergio Romo begins his celebration after striking out Miguel Cabrera.

The San Francisco Giants needed extra innings to fend off a Detroit Tigers team who fought to the bitter end. The Giants used timely hitting and the most unlikely of bullpen scenarios to stifle the tandem of Miguel Cabrera and Prince Fielder. The Giants closed out the Tigers 4-3 last night to win their second World Series Championship in three years.

The only thing more surprising than the San Francisco Giants sweep was the epic collapse of the Detroit Tigers who dominated the New York Yankees in the ACLS. The Tigers looked to be the strongest team before the Series started. Once the games began, everyone from Justin Verlander to Cabrera and Fielder seemed to be overmatched.

Marco Scutaro’s RBI single scored Ryan Theriot from second base in the top of the 10th inning, setting the stage for the closer Romo, who was dominant the entire series.

Giants third baseman Pablo Sandoval won World Series MVP. Sandoval tied a World Series record after hitting three home runs in Game 1 of the series.
