Tip-Off for 11/12/12 (featuring Digital Underground): Lakers hire Mike D’Antoni over Phil Jackson, NBA Sunday recap
A pick and roll offense, lack of defense and aging players makes this a bad hire.
Did reservations felt by owners Jim and Jerry Buss about bringing back Phil Jackson lead to the Los Angeles Lakers management hiring former Suns and Knicks coach Mike D’ Antoni?
Or is this simply a better fit for the team at this time.
D’Antoni is hoping for better results in LA.
The pick and roll is coming to Tinseltown. While defense may have inched closer to the door.
Mike D’Antoni was hired late last night to coach the Los Angeles Lakers. The contract is for 4 years totaling $12 million with the Lakers holding a fourth year option.
Lakers spokesman John Black told the LA Times the decision to hire D’Antoni was unanimous among the Lakers brass.
“We signed Mike D’Antoni to a multi-year deal,” Lakers spokesman John Black said, mentioning the team’s owner and top two executives. “Dr. [Jerry] Buss, Jim Buss and Mitch Kupchak were unanimous that Mike D’Antoni was the best coach for the team at this time.”
Jackson seemed to be the popular and most sensible move given his success with the team. But his demands for limited practices and even team ownership caused the Lakers brass to move in another direction.
D’Antoni runs a pick and roll offense along with an up tempo floor game. There is little emphasis on defense. With defensive standouts Metta World Peace and Dwight Howard, I’m curious to see what kind of scheme is put in.
D’Antoni’s coaching record is 388-339. In 2005 and 2006, he coached the Phoenix Suns to the Western Conference Finals with Steve Nash as his point guard. Things did not work out as well in New York, he resigned under heavy pressure last season amidst rumors of clashing with Knicks star Carmelo Anthony. The Knicks began the season 18-24.
