Tip-Off for 6/20/13 (featuring Dilated Peoples): Jay-Z freestyles a blueprint for African-American athletes
Roc Nation Sports has targeted among others top NHL prospect Seth Jones.
Jay-Z has done everything possible in the music industry. The Hip Hop icon has been the driving force for more than a decade spitting out multi-platinum albums, a successful clothing line and his wife just so happens to be the “hottest chick in the game”.
His recent certification as a sports agent is proof Shawn Carter is determined to literally change the face of representation for African-American athletes.
Jay-Z is pulling off a coup among sports agents not seen since the hey day of the legendary David Falk. After weeks of speculation, Shawn Carter is now licensed to represent NBA players. Carter will be able to negotiate with players once he sells his share of the Brooklyn Nets. Roc Nation Sports has partnered with Creative Artists Agency — who served as the liaison in the signing of New York Yankees second baseman Robinson Cano — Roc Nation Sports’ first client.

Geno Smith, Robinson Cano, and Victor Cruz are the newest additions to Roc Nation Sports.
Since bringing on Cano, Roc Nation Sports has signed former Notre Dame star Skylar Diggins — who was the third overall pick in this year’s WNBA Draft and Geno Smith — rookie quarterback of the New York Jets. The controversy surrounding Smith’s signing was a possible violation of the “runner rule” — which does not allow non-certified individuals to recruit players. Smith’s contract will be negotiated by Kim Maile, the new NFL agent for Roc Nation Sports. Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver DeSean Jackson has also expressed interest in signing on with Roc Nation Sports.
A deal appears close between Roc Nation Sports and New York Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz — who signed a 1-year deal worth $2.9 million last week. Last week, Cruz was photographed with Cano, Carter and Smith during the 10th anniversary of Carter’s 40/40 Sports Bar.
A most recent development has reported NBA superstar Kevin Durant firing agent Rob Pelinka with the full intention of signing with Roc Nation Sports. Carter and his wife Beyonce’ Knowles are celebrity fixtures at many NBA games during the season. Carter is friends with several players around the league — solidifying the correlation between music, sports and culture.
Roc Nation Sports’ most influential signing could come in the form of hockey phenom Seth Jones. Jones is rated as the top NHL prospect and is projected to be the first pick in NHL Draft on June 30th. Jones is the highest rated African-American NHL prospect ever, his association with Carter and Roc Nation Sports could begin a long-awaited relationship between hockey and urban America.
It is obvious Carter has done his homework when it comes to African-American athletes and how they are represented. Carter’s experience in the industry will help players like Smith — who will be under constant scrutiny in sport’s largest media market. His reputation as an astute businessman precedes him — reassuring his clients he will negotiate with their best interest in mind. Carter’s mix of street cred and Wall Street savvy will be a lure for many African-American athletes as well as others looking to join in the next movement in sports.
It’s safe to say Jay-Z is officially a business, man.
