Aaron Hernandez is taken into custody and released by the Patriots

(NBC News)

Aaron Hernandez began his day with a visit from the police and a release from his employer.

At approximately 8:45 am, New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez was taken into custody by North Attleborough Police. Hernandez is a person of interest in the murder of Odin Lloyd — whose body was found a mile from the Hernandez home nine days ago. Within the hour, the Patriots have announced the release of Hernandez.

North Attleborough Police have declined not to release the charge against Hernandez until it is presented to the court. Hernandez was led out of his home in handcuffs and placed into the back of a marked police car.

Hernandez attorney Michael Fee hasn’t discussed the investigation.

The New England Patriots have released Hernandez and issued the following statement:

“A young man was murdered last week and we extend our sympathies to the family and friends who mourn his loss. Words cannot express the disappointment we feel knowing that one of our players was arrested as a result of this investigation. We realize that law enforcement investigations into this matter are ongoing. We support their efforts and respect the process. At this time, we believe this transaction is simply the right thing to do.”
