@TSFSports Week 2 NFL Picks: The Heat’s on Early for Chip Kelly and the Eagles as the Cowboys Come Knocking

(Jason Getz/USA Today)

Philly’s top free agent Byron Maxwell was burned repeatedly by the Atlanta’s Julio Jones Monday Night.

Chip Kelly’s new look Philadelphia Eagles climbed out of a 20-3 halftime hole to the Atlanta Falcons only to drop their season opener 26-24. Cody Parker missed 44-yard field goal Kelly passed up going for the first down on fourth and short from the Falcons 27-yard line with 2:27 remaining. Ricardo Allen picked of Sam Bradford to seal the win for the Dirty Birds.

Kelly’s seemed contradictory since he brought in free agent running back DeMarco Murray — who is a north to south runner — for such an emergency. The loss ruins a great second half effort by the defense, despite a 9-catch 141-yard two touchdown effort by Falcons wideout Julio Jones done primarily against Eagles top corner Byron Maxwell.

Thursday, September 17

Denver Broncos (1-0) at Kansas City Chiefs (1-0) – Is Peyton Manning in the early stages of a drop-off? Will the Chiefs wide receivers make it to the end zone this week.

Prediction: Chiefs 24 – Broncos 22

Sunday, September 20

Houston Texans (0-1) at Carolina Panthers (1-0) – Ryan Mallett might get the start for Houston against a Carolina defense which is ready to go without Luke Kuechly (concussion) Sunday.

Prediction: Panthers 20 – Texans 13

San Francisco 49ers (1-0) at Pittsburgh Steelers (0-1) – The Steelers better hope the cross-country flight slows down Carlos Hyde. After watching Rob Gronkowski, Vernon Davis is licking his chops. D’Angelo Williams was bright spot for the Steelers on an otherwise dismal night.

Prediction: Steelers 23 – Niners 21

Tampa Bay Buccaneers (0-1) at New Orleans Saints (0-1) – Jameis Winston will play better this week, but it won’t be enough against the Saints on the road.

Prediction: Saints 27 – Bucs 16

Detroit Lions (0-1) at Minnesota Vikings (0-1) – The Vikings looked like a group playing together for the first time last week. When is Calvin Johnson going to start bossing NFL secondaries again?

Prediction: Lions 28 – Vikings 20

Arizona Cardinals (1-0) at Chicago Bears (0-1) – Call me crazy, but Carson Palmer looks like the perfect quarterback for this team. It didn’t take long for Jay Cutler’s miscues to surface last week against the Packers.

Prediction: Cardinals 31 – Bears 21

New England Patriots (1-0) at Buffalo Bills (1-0) – Bill Belichick might finally have his work cut out for him preparing for the Bills. Tyrod Taylor faces a huge test against a scheming Pats defense.

Prediction: Bills 27 – Patriots 24

San Diego Chargers (1-0) at Cincinnati Bengals (1-0) – The Bengals are looking to go up 2-0 on the AFC West early on. Andy Dalton didn’t throw a pick, nor was he sacked against the Raiders. I can see this Chargers team going places as the season goes on.

Bengals 26 – Chargers 24

Tennessee Titans (1-0) at Cleveland Browns (0-1) – Marcus Mariota played great last week and having a reliable running attack didn’t hurt. Johnny Manziel potentially starting sets up a very entertaining game.

Prediction: Browns 20 – Titans 14

Atlanta Falcons (1-0) at NY Giants (0-1) – We’ll see how the fallout from Rashad Jennings’ comments affects his touches this week. Victor Cruz still doesn’t look ready to go. Julio Jones may catch enough balls for the both of them.

Prediction: Falcons 22 – Giants 17

St. Louis Rams (1-0) at Washington (0-1) – The Rams are going to make this division respect them. Not a bad effort by Washington against a tough Miami defense last week.

Rams 28 – Washington 17

Miami Dolphins (1-0) at Jacksonville Jaguars (0-1) – An opportunistic Dolphins defense will be looking to discourage this young Jags offense early and often.

Prediction: Dolphins 24 – Jags 10

Baltimore Ravens (0-1) at Oakland Raiders (0-1) – Can’t remember the last time the Ravens and Raiders shared identical records this early. Derek Carr may be back this week, but backup Matt McGloin might get the nod. Losing Terrell Suggs stings this swarming defense.

Ravens 30 – Raiders 13

Dallas Cowboys (1-0) at Philadelphia Eagles (0-1) – Byron Maxwell is thanking his lucky stars Dez Bryant is out this week. That doesn’t mean speedster Terrence Williams is going to lie down. Once the Birds offensive line gets in sync, this offense is going to roll.

Prediction: Eagles 31 – Cowboys 22

Seattle Seahawks (0-1) at Green Bay Packers (1-0) – Can’t fine Marshawn Lynch’s mother, who tore into Seahawks offensive coordinator Wayne Bevell after Sunday’s loss. Last week was just like old times for James Jones and Aaron Rodgers as they hooked up for two scores.

Prediction: Packers 23 – Seahawks 21

Monday, September 21

NY Jets (1-0) at Indianapolis Colts (0-1) – The Colts were caught off guard in an embarrassing loss to the Bills. The Jets offense may have finally found their man in running back Chris Ivory.

Prediction: Colts 29 – Jets 17
