JaMarcus Russell Arrested for Possession of Codeine Syrup

Former Oakland Raiders quarterback JaMarcus Russell was arrested today at his home in Mobile, Alabama for possession of codeine syrup – a controlled substance. Russell was arrested as part of an undercover narcotics investigation. Mobile County Sheriff’s spokeswoman Lori Myles would not say what led to the arrest – she did state however, that Russell did not have a prescription for the medication.

“Syrup”  is underground compared to other to high profile drugs but is one of the most prevalent. Viewed as an easy and inexpensive get high - when used carelessly can have sometimes fatal results (I lost a high school buddy to it).  Sometimes it’s taken with a Valium or Xanax and called ”Pancakes and Syrup”.

Prior to his arrest, one thing that could be said for Russell was that his issues were only on the field – that’s definitely changed after today.

Russell is due in court July 20.
